I have a Giant Escape M2 8 speed. It came with a 11-32 cassette and 28/38/48 crankset. I only seem to use gears 4 to 7 (occasionally eight) on the rear and I NEVER use the 28 inner ring on the crankset.

Can anyone suggest a better set up to suit my riding style and get more usage from my components please?

Thanks in advance!

  • Find some big hills and use the lower gears.

Seriously, I guess we all have gears we rarely, if ever use. I think your bike is designed and equipped to appeal to a wide range of riders, hence the large range. Changing chain rings, shifters, mechs, cassettes etc can start getting complicated and expensive so it then becomes a question of how deep your pockets are and if the bike is worth it.

If you are moving towards quick road cycling it may be better to get a road bike!

I bought a CX with tripple (30,39,50) and 32-11 cassette - found I never used the 30 ring on the front and rarely ran up to the 32 whilst on the middle ring. So bought a 23-11 cassette - I now swap down to the 30 ring on steep hills - but the main benefit is that I've got a much closer range of gears for "normal" speeds and can flick around to get to the most appropriate one ...
