Currently I have a mix of Sram Red and Force on my bike.

I have a force front dérailleur because the 2012 red was not so hot - but I am hearing good things about the latest Red front dérailleur - the current dérailleur I have works although it requires a lot of effort. So I was considering 2 things.

1) buying the latest Red front
2) looking at the way the cable runs below the BB and maybe trying to install some cable guide in there.

Advice on the above 2 ideas would be appreciated.

Think the Red 2013 front derailleur has the yaw feature, which I think twists the shifting mechanism rather than keeping it in parrallel. This means you do not have to have the trim shift click in between large and small cog change. This means not all combinations of old and new (2013 Red) work that well, I think the main difficulty can be if you use new shifters (with no trim click) with old front derailler. You may be able to get away with old levers and new front derailler, although it is obviously best to match crank, derailler and shifters. This article tests a few combinations and I think what you trying to do should work ok :-
