Here's the very good Guy Pratt demonstrating why 'Staying Alive' should not be considered a great bass line

Well found, I was racking my brains to think if the bass line was any good! The overall music is great though isn't it, its all the bassline it needed I spose.
Would be funny if that was the bassline - but it's not! And Pratt - here's some white folks taking the fun out of everything...not ;-)

It is funny, he's just making a point, the original bass line just isn't much (to me) BUT, like I said, it doesn't have to stand out as great in isolation to suit the song and add to it. Knowing when not to play is as important as knowing when to play, something a lot of technically talented players seem to completely forget sometimes.0 -

Indeed. Kim Deal being a great example. Less is more etc.0 -
Always loved the bit where the bass comes in on the intro to Voodoo Chile . . .
The Jam (Bruce Foxton) had some epic bass lines as did/do the Stone Roses. I have to say I'm a big fan of Pixies bass lines - very simple but somehow made the tracks greater than the sum of their partsWilier Izoard XP0 -
I know some people will slate it, but the Killers have had great bass lines (on their first two albums)0

She's a good player. Jeff Beck I'll never understand though, last 20 years or so all he seems to do is cleverly pull sounds out of a guitar that do absolutely nothing for me, I know a lot of people love his playing, but it seems void of emotion! ...I dunno, I don't get it. (Mind you a lot of technical saturated guitar I don't get, people like Satriani for example, not that Id put him alongside Beck, only in the void of emotion thing, but, to me Joe S is about as impressive as seeing someone type like a rocket, its got nothing to do with real music).
Note, its only my opinion, its difficult to word without sounding like Im just saying Jeff Beck is sh1t.0 -

Not his best technically, but Entwhistle's bassline on Baba O'Riley must be his most memorable.0

Anything by Dirty Loops is worth a listen. Their bass player is something else - for instance, on their cover of Lady Gaga's Just Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpO7AFMSOJU - but be warned, if you play the bass a bit, you might have a little difficulty in copying what you hear.0

I love pretty much everything by Jane's Addiction too, some quality choonage! Three days and Whores spring to mind first.
Fools gold by the Stone Roses is tops.
This Funkin Disco effort from Idris Mohammed is ACE!

Very eclectic choice there, I like it.0 -
I agree with Nap D, you can't talk about Thee Bass without throwing in Level 42.
Some great ones mentioned here, but I'll throw in ....
....this dirty bass start (first few seconds) of "The Night", by Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons:-

My laptop isn't doing it justice!
...and I LOVE this David Bowie bassline from Heathen-

I think Radcliffe and Macone had a "the best Bass line 'eva' vote" and they concuded it was Bernadette by the Four Tops, it's great, but you can't actually hear it on this you tube version:-

This does it some justice, proper funky, and the original was played 1-fingered by James Jamerson I believe - the Hook!!

anyone heard of Jack Bruce?0
