Chainset replace/repair or upgrade

MTB noob question, I think I've done in the crank on my Specialized Rockhopper, I'm getting an intermittent click/clunk sound on just about each hard push down of the pedals. I've had a quick look on chain reaction.com and a exact replacement is really cheap http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=46021
So do I try and repair what I've got, go for a cheap exact replacement or think about upgrading all assuming it is the crank that's gone.
It's a Shimano M442 Square Taper Chainset

The sound could be one of many things.

Might be worth popping into your local bike shop, they should be able to tell you which part needs replacing if your still unsure. As Supersonic says, it can be many things not just a chainset.0

Thanks for the reply lads, I've had a good look round the bike and cant find anything obvious, took it for a ride and convinced it's to do with the crankset, but it's a Shimano and looks like it needs a special set of tools to remove it.
I'm going to drop it into the local bike shop and see if they can sort it.
On the plus side it was good to get out today for a blat in the snow! 8)Paracyclist
