How much cycle clothing do you have and is it all necessary?

I only started cycling regularly this time last year after a number of years out.

I started off with 2 x cycle tops, 2 x pairs of cycle padded shorts, 2x shorts, trainers and a cycle helmet.

1 year later I have amassed 12 cycle tops of various styles, 6 pairs of padded shorts, 1 x bib shorts (another to be ordered), 3 x shorts, 3 pairs of cycle gloves, still only 1 x helmet, 2 x cycle shoes (cleats) 12 pair of socks, 3 x various protective cycle jackets, 3 x pairs of cycle glasses, arm warmers/leg warmers, various base layers & a cycle cap.

I'm not even going to go into all the cycle accessories I have amassed.

I tend to only wear 3 or 4 of my cycle tops (not at the same time) and a couple of the shorts. The socks get regular outings as does the jackets and gloves.

Is this normal behaviour or excessive? Do others generally have this amount or less (or more)?

Other than a love for socks then it all seems normal enough. You still need to add hats, overshoes, buffs, base layers, gilet, skin suit and other bits so there is still more to get. Then apply the n+1 rule for bikes and the specific kit you'll need for each bike such as twat hat for your TT bike, mtb shoes for your mtb, and so on. Don't worry too much mate, you're collection will only grow year on year

    Not not being overly obsessive.

Your not that far of my collection though you would need to add in over socks, toe covers, overshoes, skull cap, buff, 3/4 shorts, gilet, knee warmers.

As long as you are sensible about it & build your collection up over time & buy good quality items I see them as a worthwhile investment.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

All my bike kit is in a walk-in wardrobe - and that's half of it. There's two large holdalls of summer kit in my loft which I switch around for the summer (ha ha!) I won't even attempt to total it all up.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

1 pair of Speedos, a sponge and a pair of Dunlop green flash pumps, oh, and a Rapha winter cap.
I personally feel that I could lose the sponge but at times it can get uncomfortable on long rides.

You haven't got enough kit until your missus says, "Get that sh1t out of my wardrobe".

Another way of telling is when you start getting stuff delivered to a mates house so she doesn't find out.

I've only been cycling for five months and have already doubled the amount I paid for the bike on clothing and accessories.

The Mrs thought that once I had purchased the bike then that was the large expenditure done and dusted - naively so did I.

I had to buy a whole new chest of drawers from Ikea for my kit which off the top of my head is:

    10+ Short Sleeve Jerseys
    3 Long Sleeve Jerseys
    Gilet
    Ripstop Jacket
    Lightweight Softshell
    Dayglo Winter Jacket
    12+ pairs of cycling socks
    8 pairs bib shorts
    2 pairs roubaix bib knickers
    2 pair 'normal' bib knickers
    1 pair tights with pad
    2 pairs tights without pad
    4 pairs mitts
3 pairs summer long finger gloves
    3 pairs winter gloves
    3 pairs knee warmers
    6 pairs arm warmers
    2 pairs overshoes
    2 pairs over socks
    2 pairs road shoes
    2 pairs MTB shoes
    5 Caps
    4 Winter Hats
    3 Helmets
    3 buffs
10+ undershirts (mix of sleevless, short sleeve and long sleeve)

and I've just sold a load of stuff on here a few weeks back and the stuff that I thought was too worn out to sell went to the charity shop!

There's a mix of club kit, Cervo Rosso Test Team kit and then 'the rest'. Pretty much all of it gets used regularly although I may be having another sale on here in the near future!
