Cold you should be OK if you take it easy. Chest infection you should be on medication to clear that up & riding will only make you worse.Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0

Head cold-still ride
On the chest-forget it-rest up/get it checked out-go for a ride if you want but you could end up making it much worse-whats 5 days without a ride compared to a possible 5 months?0 -
if it's below the neck, then clean your bike insteadRecipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.0

when its below the neck forget the ride
will benefit more from the rest up than you will the rideCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Defo rest up, it wont hurt your training and you may even benefit0

rest up,I had one took 3 weeks to get over enough to go outside. Not worth risking it.Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori0

+1 for the rest. I got out yesterday for the first time in 6 weeks after a lingering cold and chest infection, my lungs still feel tight now and I finished the antibiotics a week and a half ago. So get to the doctor if you haven't already and rest up.0

All the advice re chest colds is right ... I know its right ... I am just beggining my third week off with one and starting a two week holiday ... I just spent £250 (ish) on roof bars and a bike carrier to take the bike on holiday ... I can hardly remember ever feeling so f**ing sorry for myself
Anyway I know its right but how much fitness would you say you lost after the 6 weeks off? Anyone else estimate how much you lost?
Say as a % decrease so we can all translate it to our own levels?0 -

Not sure about a percentage decrease but to give some perspective I rode an 18 mile loop that is my short loop and I was 7 mins off my pb. I probably pushed a little harder than I should have as my lungs are just starting to feel less tight. I'm planning on getting out tomorrow for a longer one so i'll see how that goes, think is gonna be a good few weeks of turbos and long rides before I'm back to normal. At least the clock have changed so there will be some nice light evening rides soon.0 -
Good time to catch up on bike maintenance and do all the DIY jobs that'll get in the way of cycling later on. I had a chest infection for about 3 months over the winter, very frustrating but at least it wasn't summer. Seek medication and the doc as early as possible, I did the man thing and thought it'd clear up itself.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

I am currently trying to recover from the worst bout of flu & chest infection I've ever had. I am going down the man route and self medicating with codeine, paracetamol and whiskey. I am coming up to my second week of no physical activity whatsoever. Even thinking about going for a ride in this weather makes my bones ache. Stay in!!0
