Reach adjustment on sti shifters

I have shimano 2300 shifters, but despite not having small hands, find them a bit of a reach... I see that they are allegedly adjustable via shims, so presume they are fully shimmed at the mo, and will look at that. Are the shims in the clamp band unit somewhere?

However, I also see that there are 2 types of adjustment blocks 4 and 8 degrees. Anyone know what these are for?

Cheers

Those blocks are for reach adjustment IIRC. You pull the brake lever down and there's a nubbin that those fit on.

I imagine 4 and 8 degrees relate to how much you want to adjust the reach. A thicker shim pushes the lever back 4 degrees more I guess.

Good luck trying to get these though. I remember hunting for them everywhere when I had the 2300 groupset on a Specialized Tricross. Even emailed Shimano who helpfully ignored my email. Eventually resorted to changing the groupset* to 105 which had a more conventional reach.

*and the bike to a Cannondale Synapse

Does anyone know if these are cross compatible? I have the shims from Ultegra 6700 (i don't think these would do 2300) but somewhere i also have some from Tiagra 4600?? I think - if anyone can confirm whether these would fit or not i would happily stick them in the post for ya.

I suggest you ask your LBS if they have any spares laying around. Every new Shimano equiped bike comes with the shims and the vast majority are thrown away.
FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future
    FCN 4: Planet X Schmaffenschmack 2- workhorse
FCN 9: B Twin Vitamin - winter commuter/loan bike for trainees

    I'm hungry. I'm always hungry!

On further investigation, they may well work! Is your kind offer still valid? I'll PM my address to you, edit:emailed you

You could try Evans Cycles and see if any of these fit your shifters. Shims for £3.

I also have the same problems of reach due to small hands. My new bike came with rubber shim inserts with the 105 shifters. This did help somwhat.

I also changed the handlebars to more compact rounded so I could reach the levers in the drop position. Bontranger, FSA and PRO do a range of compact bars (make sure you choose the rounded style instead of the ergo style). The ergo style has a angled slant at the bottom of the hoop, if that makes sense.

    Here are some examples.
