crank tool

Hopefully a simple post but can someone tell me if i definitely need a crank removal tool.. i have a 2011 claud butler san remo.

    ...only if you need to remove (or tighten) your crank.
    ...which is usually seldom, or never.

    Need to rule out the crank making a clicking sound so best to remove clean and reassemble

    I'd be surprised if it was the crank as its square taper, more likely to be the bottom bracket. The only cranks, from reading, that can click are the type that are are held on by allen bolts in the crank arm, e.g.. shim hollowtech II. Seems a shame to buy a tool that'll get very little use. Is there any play in the bottom bracket?
