Tyre wear on rollers

Hi Guys

Half way through an hour long session on the rollers tonight, I suddenly found it really hard work and new something weren't quite right. I flipped the bike upside down and on inspection noticed that the rear tyre had worn right through the rubber to the fibers below every 6 - 7" or so. Now when I really hammer it, I do get a slight bobbing motion going until I back off abit and everything is smooth again. Now I think that it's this bobbing motion that is causing this but, what I really want to know is, has this happened to anyone else on here, and if so,what did you do to combat it it? The tyre is not by any means new but, I have only had the rollers for about a month, so it has worn through very quickly indeed.

Rollers are Elite mags

get an indoor trainer tyre - they are pretty much never going to wear out

Rollers or turbo? I don't normally get any problems on the rolleres unless I'm flat out and trying to spin at 150rpm, but thats always down to my dodgy technique.
Don't buy turbo trainer tyres, just buy vittoria zaffiros for the turbo, they go hard and last forever.

I was just wondering whether or not to close the rear rollers in a bit, maybe the tyre is sitting too deep between the rear pair of rollers, thus leading to the said bobbing action and extra quick wear to the tyre?

Thanks for your ideas so far guys 8)

I destroyed my original bike tyre on the turbo but the schwarble turbo tyre looks bomb proof and is going strong.

re-measure the distance between axles on your bike and check your rollers are set to or very slightly greater than this.

As they have built in resistance I assume this will cause more wear than other rollers but less than a turbo.

Good advice this ^. I will do that now - thanks all.
May well fit a purpose made tyre as well.

I find an indoor tyre is better all round even on the rollers - quieter, less wear, less slip, less vibration etc with my alu rollers. I went as far as grabbing a 2nd one cheap to put on the front so have a full set of wheels with trainer tyres for use on the rollers.

  • I've just picked up one of these. Came recommended by a friend and on sale at the moment. Seem to be a ways cheaper than most turbo tyres.

I went for them because I live in a first floor flat and need all the help I can get to reduce noise/vibration. Also got some rubber matting for under the turbo hoping that will deaden some of the noise too.

I'll report back and let you know how they are.

Thanks for the link - I'm deffo gonna look into getting a training tyre. Actually, do I get one just for the back wheel or a pair? I wouldn't of thought i'd need one on the front. :?

  • I couldn't say. I have a turbo trainer rather than rollers. I suspect that there's a lot less wear on the front tyre though as I imagine most of the wear is caused by friction/slippage of the drive wheel?

In your first post you mentioned that there was damage to the back tyre but didn't mention any to the front, so that probably gives you your answer? :)

Still think the problem is not the tyre, there is not enough resistance on a properly set up roller to cause tyre wear.

email Elite for an opinion, would be interested in their response. http://www.elite-it.com/contact/

But two nice new blue 'turbo' tyres would look the business :D

I've got Zaffiros as my main tyres anyway so haven't noticed any wear on the turbo ;)

I have no idea what's going on here.
