Im thinking of doing the Silverstone 24hour ride for charity

Am I crazy, the longest I have been in the saddle for one day is 9 hours 40mins. What sort of training comittment would I need to do to prepare for a 24 hour solo challenge.

    Most important thing to consider is fueling. Eat early and often and aim to drink at least a bottle an hour.

    Yep all about the fuel, I did a 24hr ride and it was fine just need to keep yourself fully fueled up at all times.

    I was thinking of stopping every hour or two hours to refuel, with a short break no doubt getting longer as time progresses.

    My other biggest worry is bordem, the initial rush of pretending to be a formula one driver we soon wear off after a couple of laps.

    I hate stopping, freezes up my legs. On my last 12hr I was in the saddle for all but 5 minutes (longest pee I've ever taken). I was never bored as I spent most of the times computing fueling in relation to speed and power, but then again the scenery was a damn site more interesting than Silverstone.

    go for it...good luck with fund raising and getting it done!

    having ridden and run around Silverstone several times here's a few things to be aware of:

    1. its windy as hell, all the time! It used to be an airfield so no surprise there. Cycling into a head wind on one of the straights is like cycling into a wind tunnel and forward progress seems hard to make at times! Being able to get in the drops and get out of the wind as much as you can will really help.

    2. its not flat either ;)

    3. and it IS boring as hell as while it sounds fun to be a F1 circuit, its all the same and just a ribbon of endless grey with ad boards around it. I guess it will be more interesting on the day though with all the activity

    4. of course the surface is superb though and not a pot hole in sight :D

    I was goona use a set of clipon TT bars, so hopefully that will help with any headwind.

    It's a circuit, so any headwind will become a crosswind and then tailwind. Get used to the aero bars on a few training rides or TTs first.

    Im going to be taking part in my clubs weekly 10mile TTs this year, so will hopefully have good practice on the aerobars.

    I'm still on the fence for this one. It's 2 weeks after a 12 and 3 weeks before a 24...

    Well if you do, look out for me I will be the guy with Scope written on the his back riding a pinarello or a old peogeot if it starts to rain and will proberbly be swearing and calling himself an idiot for doing this.

    Check what is allowed on the track whilst the event is on. I have done the 24hr event at Le Mans a couple of times (in a team...) and TT bars, disc wheels and fixies are not allowed on the track.

    Awesome fun event though but a head wind at 3am is pretty demoralising

    4.4 Condition of cycles and equipment
    Participants will be responsible for their own cycle which must be fully roadworthy. If the event
    is to be held in poor or little light or if there is a possibility of the ride finishing in darkness,
    then front and rear lights must be used and must have adequate battery life for the duration of
    the event.
    The use of triathlon handlebars or other bar extensions is discouraged in non-competitive
    events for safety reasons. However, where riders do have them fitted they must not be used
    when riding in a group and riders must allow for a gap to the rider(s) in front that allows time
    to reach for their brakes if necessary. This information must be made known to participants
    prior to the event.

    Discouraged but allowed as long as you dont draft other cyclists.

    I am thinking of averaging a minimum of 10mph, so at least 240miles +.

    I am thinking of starting off doing 4 laps an hour with a short break and then dropping that to 3 laps an hour with a break as this should give me like a 20 to 15 min break every hour.

    I dont plan on sleeping.

    I did the Ride24 event a few years ago (as part of a team) and riding in a group is one of the main advantages in this type of event, you can always form one....and it's more fun.

    I would sacrifice the tri bars to be in a group

    I think I'll give this one a miss. Way too expensive for what it is as it would only cost me a bit more to do another 24 States-side. I'd be disappointed with anything less than 400 miles though...
