Dodgy shifting?

My bike has a shimano 2300 groupset. It's dirt cheap and I want to improve the quality of the shifting. Could this be done by upgrading the rear mech to say 105? Would it require upgrading the shifters? :D

I doubt wether upgrading the rear mech will make a jot of difference to the quality of shifting. Unless it is very badly worn in the first place.

It might improve things if you replaced the shifters. However, the most cost effective way of improving shifting is probably replacing the cabling in its entirety and then setting it up correctly. Then check to see if there is any wear in the chain. Again, another relatively low cost upgrade.

    Hope that helps,
    Gary.

I have 2300 on my winter bike and it's smooth as silk. Take it to your LBS and get it set up correctly and if you can watch them doing it. If you want to upgrade you would have to upgrade the whole drivetrain as 2300 is 8 speed and 105 is 10 speed.

I also have 2300 on my winter bike and its behaved perfectly.Never missed a gear or been anything other than 100% reliable.Sounds like yours isn,t set up properly.

2300 shifts just fine unless there's a problem somewhere. What do you mean by dodgy? If the shifting at the rear is inaccurate and it can't be tuned out, it's often just friction in the cables that can be cured by replacing the cables. Sometimes just replacing the outer loop at the RD is enough to cure it. If you've done several thousand miles, there may be excess play in the RD pivot due to wear which hinders shifting - cured by replacing the RD. If the chain is jumping off the cogs when you're not shifting then it is likely that the chain and cassette are worn. If you're not confident in tackling maintenance tasks like adjusting shifting or replacing cables, then take it to your LBS. If you just want to upgrade from 2300, it's probably more economical to replace the whole bike.

Ditto. Except shifting started to stick one time, so I sprayed inside the shifters with GT85 and carefully lubed the cables; it was fine again. I've also replace the chainn when worn - with a KMC one which did improve things slightly. I now lube the cables a couple of times a month but don't do any other fettling at all, except cleaning the chain etc. Its been 99% reliable. I wouldn't upgrade anything except maybe cables. Its not worth investing in as it is cheap and also I'm not sure how compatible it would be.
