Previously owned a Kona Hahanna when I was at school and most recently a Specialized Hardrock, which has pretty much fallen to pieces.

Is just between those? There are probably better bikes out there for less money.

No I'm open to suggestions, I have about 800 to play with.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have a browse over those but I do like the look of the canyon at first glance.

The GT Avalanche seems quite pricey when compared with the others

From what's already been suggested above I'd go for the Cube or Canyon.
If you can raise the extra £250 then this is worth a look...

After looking over those bikes i do like the Canyon but it's out of the question as i would be relying on getting the bike on finance.

With the Canyon out of the picture, i like the Cube LTD, looking on that website though i came across the 2013 model http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m1b67s2p4685/CUBE-LTD-2013

it'll end up at £65 a month, is it worth it over the 2012 model? aside from the fact i much prefer the look of the 2013.

looks like £260 more for the same bike...

personally I prefer the look of the 2012.

Yeah, i see the brakes are different but not much else really...

I see pauls cycles only do the 2012 in 16" or 20", i'm currently on a 17.5", i've been on a friends bike which is 21" and its far too big for me, i'll have to have a look around for the 2012 model somewhere else if that's what i end up getting.

I'm no expert, but I think those brakes are pretty similar as well, both hydraulics which is what matters and some seem to some say formula are better and vice versa.. how tall are you? what is your arm span and inside leg? what 17.5" bike are you on?
  • also worth considering..

although imo the Cube edges this.

I'm 5'8ish and inside leg about 30". I had been riding a 17.5" Hardrock which after a year of abuse is near the end, took it up to Keswick around Lonscale Fell and i think that was the final nail!
