Hello everyone!

I took delivery of the 810 today. I've logged the product on Garmin connect. But, for the life of me, when I load up the SD card into my Apple SD slot, it all gets messy! i had hoped, having downloaded the correct apple software off the Garmin site things would be ok...but, they aren't!!!

Anyone knowledgable out there what I need to do to load the maps upon to the 810?

Regards

rob

So you're trying to download the maps you bought online onto the SD card, but your PC isn't recognising the card?

If so, try reinstalling the software. Or try inserting the SD card into the garmin and then plug garmin via usb. Not sure if the last one works, but it's worth a try.

After inserting the card into the 810 have you gone into settings-maps etc to tell it to use the city maps instead of the standard loaded map ? I'm sure that's what I had to do on my 800.

So load the card go into the map settings then tell it to use the city nav maps then connect the Garmin via the usb then go on the Garmin connect site you should hopefully see the maps then.

If yiu are not impressed with the maps then perhaps you did something else wrong, the maps are of excellent quality. All you needed to do was place the micro SD card in the 810 unit and it would have found the maps. Why did you have it plugged into your Apple? The manual does state the maps cannot be used on a desktop unit PC or Apple. Lets hope you didnt corrupt the file in your bungled attempts to get the maps on the unit.

Just to correct another mistake above, the maps you see on Connect are not those on your unit.

What is your current status so we can try to help you?

    hi

not sure the maps have been corrupted but worth considering. i have finally 'bungled' my way through to loading a route in but the graphics are still in plan view and very basic! i suppose i am comparing the marketing material with what i can see and they are quite wide of the mark at the moment. again, i am comparing the map info to my garmin aviation gps but am still concerned ive not fully accessed the whole map program! hope i make sense.

When the unit is booting up, can you see a message that says loading maps?

You say the maps is in plan view, what other view was you expecting? 3D

I suspect what you are seeing is the basemap which comes pre loaded on the unit and is very basic showing only the major routes, you may have buggered the file on the SD card, how you deal with that depends on your own personal ethics. just another thought have you tried using the Zoom function, just in case you were just zoomed in on one road?
I take it that you have RTFM by now and can try that

I think from what you are saying i am best trotting back to the shop to have a chat. I should add they were the ones who stuck the sd card into my computer in the first place so I'm not expecting too many issues getting it sorted.

To continue the sighs from you (:)) what is rtfm???

    rob

ps. another issue i'm not overly happy with is turning the unit on and off..it is very temperamental!

I have a question and rather than opening up another thread thought I would tack it on here if you don't mind...

To get the live tracker to work does the rider need to carry a smart phone or does it work if I was to only have the 810. Reason for asking is I don't have a smart phone only a prehistoric brick but the live tracker would be very useful as I go out a lot on my own for many hours and this would be very useful if god forbid something was to happen whilst pedalling away.

The 810 does not have a mobile phone in it. It connects to the Garmin Connect mobile app, which runs on iOS and Android.

This is why I didn't bother with the 810, but got the 800 instead. I'd still need to carry my phone, which already has GPS and hence live tracking if you want it. I'm a little disappointed that Virtual Partner isn't the same as Virtual Racer, which the 810 has but the 800 hasn't, but not another 150 quid disappointed.

Pretty pointless then IMO. I think I will hang out for a 2nd hand 800 (just missed one today) or if the new prices drop a little more get one of those, thanks for clearing that up, you have just saved me £300 :)

Glad to save you the money!

The other thing people tend to say (that might be a reason for getting the 810) is that phone batteries (especially iPhone ones apparently) don't last very long when using GPS, so on a very long ride you might run out of battery before the end.

FYI, I have a Galaxy S3, and with GPS on and the GPS Route Tracker app running (which does all the uploading of position to tinternet so that loved ones can see that you're still moving), my battery drops to about half after 4-4.5 hours.

So I could do a pretty long sportive on one battery, although I'll carry a spare for any century rides I do.
