Upgrading to 10 speed - what to watch out for?

Hi all,

Got a load of parts on the way (pretty much whole group set except BB and cranks) to upgrade my Boardman Race to 105. I've had a look on parktools, youtube and my Haynes bike book and it all looks pretty straight forward but I was just wondering if you guys had any top tips or lessons learned from when you have replaced components on your own bikes? I know with any job that there are often little niggles that are more difficult than first envisaged!

Any tips you guys can give will be gratefully received, especially as I'm sure there's probably something I haven't thought of!

  • As long as you have good tools to hand (especially good cable cutters and allen keys) and are patients it should be easy. The main thing I have found difficult is trusting my judgement on torque for bolts - I only have an Al frame and so it doesn't matter as much but I'm a bit neurotic about it ! Make a note of where your shifters are (if they are comfortable) and cable outer lengths (if your current shifting was good) so your new set up will mirror old.
  • Thanks :) One question I did have, which I couldn't tell when I ordered the cassettes was whether the 1mm spacer required for 10sp cassettes is included with a new 105 cassette or whether I would need to get them separately?

shimano 105 cassette needs a spacer, it should come in the box with the cassette

if it's gone missing you can buy one separately
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny
  • there ya go :D
  • Thanks! Got an Ice Toolz Essence kit coming and some snazzy Jagwire cutters. I *think* that has everything I'll need.

  • Ok, I have a 50/34 compact chainset and am putting on a 11-28 cassette. My bike spec says 405mm chain stay (Boardman Race Medium). To the best of my calculations, that means a 52" chain length? Anyone who has a clue about these things know if I'm right? :?

Never felt the need to measure a chain just use the Shimano tech docs that come with your gear set up usually chain around big front big rear do not go through the rear mech, the chain should meet and then add 2 links. Link below shows what I mean.

    Yep, do this.

10 speed groups are a lot harder to get dialled in just right, so always make small adjustments!
  • Thanks! :) That seems loads easier!!

Using the calculator in the attached link suggests a chain length of 53 inches but I'm sure if you stuck to your 52 figure you'd be fine. As long as you don't ride big/big (ie 50/28) too often, if at all. there will be no issues.
