Front shifter cable brain fart

Changing the cables on my XT shifters (M770 I think) and having a complete mare trying to get the cable back through the front one.. if I click it to the lowest gear (black lever) there doesn't seem to be a clear passage through for the cable, if I click it to the highest gear (grey lever I can see through the shifter but the cable end doesn't seem to have anything to seat properly on when I pull it through..

Any suggestions? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but my cold-addled brain is having none of it!

Click into the lowest gear. Then poke about inside the cable hole - the cradle thing sometimes moves a bit.

Sometimes worth removing the cable adjuster to open up the exit hole then refitting (DON'T LOOSE THE SPRING!).

Yeah, I've done the above but to no available.. as mentioned it may be that the cradle is not quite set at the right position.. will try again in the morning!
