In a world of diminishing icons, we at least have Voigt. Solid, down to earth, hard as nails and still going.

As a tribute to him and the hope he is still a pro at 55, we can compile a list of icons past and present. As creator of this thread with an automatic right to set the yardstick :D , I am putting him at the top of the list.

(Doesn't have to be cyclists. Once we have 50, I will do a poll and see who gets the top vote)

1. Jens Voigt
2. ...

Voigt, a tremendous call P1. You just want people like him to go on forever like a great film that you don't want to end. I think there will be more in sport than anything else and in sport more in cycling because it's not a sport for tarts.

As a bit of a luvvy I'm going to put forward actor Stanley Baker. Great filmography, gritty actor and starring of one of my favourite films Zulu.

Absolubtley no argument here, Jens for No1.

After the betrayal of Armstrong, the questionability of Cipollini and the premature death of Pantani , he and Merckx are the only ones of my Icons left.

    Shut up legs, Every ride.

    25 screws ?

Per race ? Same person ?
  • Not in the same league as Jens but I think Chris Anker Sorenson is a current rider who gives his all day after day. During last years Tour he seemed to be either out in a breakaway or at the front of the peloton everyday.

Cyclist - Bradley Wiggins - in yellow and working on the front for Cav on the Champs Elysees.

Non-cyclists: Stephen Hawking, David Attenborough, John Cale, Julian Cope.

Muhammad Ali. Bit obvious that one.

I'll also suggest Torvill and Dean.

    Steven Spielberg.

He used to live at the bottom of the street where I grew up. It was a row of a dozen or so houses. His dad was the posh white collar worker and his mum a teacher on the street and Julian and his brother didn't really mix with the rest of us kids (tbh Julian is a few years older than me and must be in his mid fifties now I guess). In the early 70's he would be walking down from the bus stop with a long mac on and a guitar on his back, very bohemian but back then to a group of dirty faced kids he was a bit weird. Of course we all changed our tune when the Teardrop Explodes became a big group and I can remember walking past the house and seeing the gold disc for Kilaminjaro on the wall.

I must admit that I am not as well read and had to google the first pair.
Maya Angelou ? 6 autobiographies wtf ? Were the first 5 shite?

Anyway to prove I am not well read, I am amazed we have gotten to page 2 and no-one has mentioned a porn star.
How about John Holmes. As a bloke, he wasn't up to much, but credit where credit is due.........

What, no Bono? or is he number 4?

    What about Gino Bartali?

Risked his life to hide a Jewish family in his cellar during the war. When training he acted as a courier for the resistance going through Nazi checkpoints with documents in his seat tube, again risking his life. Never talked about it afterwards, saying "One does these things and then that's that". Liked a smoke and a drink but won 3 Giros, 1TdF, more if it wasnt for Coppi, continued to race until he was 40 years old. I could go on.

    Deffo no Bono.

Geldof called the president of Ethiopia a c**t to his face. He saved lives and shook our consience, whats wrong with that ? I think thats commendable, he helped where he could, and I know he is responsible for Peaches Geldof but we all make mistakes

  • Hard men.

There are many, but few quite as tough as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Carton_de_Wiart
Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Paul Ghislain Carton de Wiart[1] VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO (5 May 1880 – 5 June 1963), was an English officer of Belgian and Irish descent. He fought in the Boer War, World War I, and World War II; was shot in the face, head, stomach, ankle, leg, hip and ear; survived a plane crash, tunneled out of a POW camp, and bit off his own fingers when a doctor wouldn't amputate them. He later said "frankly I had enjoyed the war."

That would only be the case for me if Johnny Craphole became famous.

Icons - ian rush, bishop abel muzorewa, and brian walden.

Mmmmm. Crashed him off Twitter due to his endless boring multiple tweets. Read Hamiltons book where he has contact with JV in the peloton....not such a nice guy.
