Hey, I was wondering if it is possible to get a square taper BB for this frame. Im a noob with BBs so i have no clue whatsoever really, ive been told it takes a 68mm english BB but all the ones ive seen need a 2 piece crank which costs an arm and a leg, and i already have a crank for this but i need a square taper BB for it. I can see that the shell is threaded but i really have no clue about anything else
Can anyone help me out? My bike is a GT Chucker XS1. Here are the pictures. One of the bike and the rest of the BB shell
Thats not rust there btw, its just mucky grease

Yes, no problem, in fact I have a few spare in various lengths if you want one cheap and I have the right one!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Honestly, i would, but my mum doesnt buy things online unless its from amazon or from a shop the amount of stuff i would get if she would just let me!!! I should be opening a bank account in the not to distant future so just gotta wait till then.
I was VERY lucky with getting this bike. I checked every day for like 2 weeks then i saw this one up for sale literally a 5 min drive away, if that. Messaged the seller and came to an agreement, went and picked it up!
So will this fit? if i chose the 68mm length. If not, what do i need? and what length should i choose?0 -
Will what 'this' fit?
68mm is the width of the shell in the frame, the axle width (anything from 103 to 128mm) you need is dictated by the crankset and rear wheel you run.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Ohh okay, and sorry about that, i forgot to post the link, here it is

Judging by what you said, it should fit i think
Thanks again beginner0 -
I'm sure everyone will disagree with me, but personally I'd steer clear of those BBs with plastic lockrings. I've munched up two of those trying to get them out of the frame and then it's a bit of a hassle digging all of the broken bits of plastic out! Not disastrous, but still a PITA.
And whilst we're on the subject, I'd definitely advise getting some anti-seize compound such as Park Tools ASC-1. The bottom bracket is the first thing to get covered in water, mud and grit so covering the threads in this stuff should stop it seizing itself in there. I've not had a single problem with a stuck bolt in the 4 years since I started using it, it's great stuff. Good luck!0 -
Never had a problem with plastic support rings, and they are lighter!
That link would fit, but may not be the right length depending on the rear wheel and crankset.
You need to
1/ Source rear wheel and single sprocket (single specific wheel or ss conversion), this dictates your chainline
2/ Source the crankset you want
3/ Match the chainline to the crankset to determine BB axle width to get the same chainline at the front as at the rear.
As you can see, the BB comes last, not first!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Thanks guys
@buck: I saw that there was a link on that ebay page for a deore BB that came in the same sizes and had no plastic on it at all, so i could conisder that
@beginner: I see the logic behind getting the BB last now, so thats what i shall do Im almost certain that ill have a single ring at the front but i dont know if ill go single speed or 8x1. Havent decided yet.0
