They seated properly? Also, no tyre is perfectly round, and some less so than others.

...the rims ZTR ARCH29er [I" with Conti 2.2 tyres] seem to be way too narrow for the inner tube to 'lift' the beading to the rim edges. I have tried inflating the tyre till it's really hard, but when I deflate it a little, the beads still haven't seated. I appreciate that no tyre is perfectly round, but the prob is getting the bead seated properly.

Lubrication? Bit of fairy liquid smeared round the inside of rim can help ease it home.
