Cr4ap snow and wet roads up here for days. Couldn’t face the turbo and it was a bit too treacherous for the winter bike so decided to take the new MTB on my 26 mile week-day loop. Good god. With the strong freezing wind behind me I ran out of gears pretty quickly but thought ‘aye this isn’t too bad’, however on the home leg and into the blasting wind I was dropping to 9 mph at points! Talk about rolling resistance – and the bike weighs more than two of my road bikes together – and I didn’t have mudguards – and to top it off a bloke on a road bike ignored me!

It’s much nicer being a roadie ;-)

    MTB pah!

Only kidding, I guess it must be nice to switch it up occasionally, since I got my road bike I have stored my hardtail away but I might take it out for a spin. Wouldnt mind the relaxed seating position for a while!

I bought mine for a few reasons. The other half was giving me grief because I never went out on runs with her – she rides a feckin Pashely so no wonder  I’ve got a few mates who I’m trying to convert to road, so I can go on trails with them and try and bring them into the light using the ‘see, you can do both’ angle. I get to explore even more of my back yard on two wheels.

    I still feel dirty though.

I ride my road bike with MTB shorts or 3/4 baggies and I don't give a flying fig what anyone else thinks. I can also be found wearing earphones at times too.

Just for the record - I was joking about the baggies. Me? In MTB specific cycling kit? How very dare you!

This lot don't seem to have any issues with it. That said, I would have thought showing up at a Sunday club run in full DH kit with matching bike might raise the odd eyebrow.

However............I know quite a few roadies who are 'ex' Mountain Bikers, myself included. MTBs are a great 'general' riding bike - I used to cycle along the Pymmes Brook Trial in Nth London, across to the Lee Navigation (canal) and then anywhere north as far as Bishops Stortford or south down to Limehouse Basin. Those were really fun rides and, while I consider myself more of a 'roadie' now, it was the MTB that got me back into cycling. True for many others?

I kind of did the opposite to the OP yesterday.

I've been riding my MTB to work since late last year. It weighs a fair bit and still has Marathon Winters studded tyres fitted. I ride it with a Casco Viper MX helmet c/w chin guard.

Yesterday I rode my Bianchi with my Limar Pro 104 helmet for the first time in ages.

Wow! Felt like I'd been turbocharged!
