Hi all,

So I am putting my 1'1/8 forks in to my new tapered head tube frame until I can afford new forks.

I have bought one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hope-Tapered-1-5-to-1-1-8-Reducer-Crown-Race-Brand-New-/281071409207?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item4171295837

Sorry for the ebay link - it ws the best example I could find...

Do I need a 1.5' normal race to go on top of that or does this alone do the job?

Apologies for the noob question! I'm very new to this tapered lark.

Cheers,

Mike

Am afraid not, it is designed to be used with Hope's headset. Unless you have a Hope tapered headset in there.

You need a tapered headset still... but this is the right part to go with that, so you're half way there. Its converting your forks to be tapered effectively. Lots of choices there though. Did one come with the frame?

... its odd they call it a crown reducer. Its a crown expander surely?

    I don't have a hope headset - just a standard integrated 1'1/8 to 1.5'.

Is there a race similar to what I have that will do the conversion or do I just need to buy a new headset?

The frame is a canyon nerve xc and I bought it 2nd hand with the integrated headset included.

Not sure why SS thinks it won't work, all you are doing is fitting a steerer expander that you can then fit the crown race onto from your tapered headset (Hope or otherwise) from what I can see.

Hmm, I thought it was just one big Hope crown race!

I use this reducer on my Hope headset, the Hope site & tech suggests it's only for an integrated headset but I'm using it with an external 1.5" cup. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with any 1.5" bottom cup as a reducer.

Ok - so I just need a 1.5' crown race to go on top. I'll give it a try.

Your current one should do the job!

Dusk maybe that's because most people would just fit a semi integrated lower bearing!

It didn't come with a race. That's why I was hoping the adaptor would work on its own. Hopefully the LBS will have a race in stock to give it a try!

What didn't come with a race?

Your headset must have had a race at some time.......they are different, you need the race for your headset, no race and your probably buying a new headset and may as well have bought a reducing one.

I bought the frame 2nd hand and the headset was included but without the race - I assume it stayed on the forks the the original owner kept.

I may just buy a complete headset to be on the safe side and hope the adaptor works. I'll update once I have found a race/new headset.
