got a question about chain rings

Hi all
Ive just finishing my pinnacle iroko hack bike build and I've have a choice, buy and fit a slim for my front derailuer as the pinnacle has a narrower seat tube than the donor bike or go for a single chain ring at the front.
I currently have a St suntour ppf crank set with 42/32/24. So could I go for a single ring up front maybe something between the 24 and 32?

Yes - 32 is the norm. But you'd need some way of retaining the chain.0

Like a chain guide? As the bikes got an octalink bb, will I have to get a seat post mounted type?0
