Hey Just wondering what cycling event of the year is most popular and what distances are involved etc.
You never really see any cycling events advertised like all the great north runs or london marathons that runners have.

Ride London is well known, but there's tons of sportives run around london all the time if thats you thing. Check out the road calendar on british cyclings website, lots of info there.0

In terms of how well known it is, London to Brighton maybe? I had certainly heard of it before I got into cycling.0

London to Brighton? I would say that was probably the (amateur) event that I knew before getting into cycling.0

L2B is a pub crawl..........at least thats the best way to do it, hic
Ride London 100 is now the nearest, or at least will be when it has actually taken place
I think all 3 events will have one thing in common. Anyone want to guess what I think it is?0 -
If your comparison with the London Marathon is due to the huge number of people participating (rather than the challenge of completing a marathon itself which could be done at a local event) then yes the only thing in the UK that's similar will be be the London 100 this summer. L2B isn't the same physical challenge at all.
If you're not looking just within the UK though there's the L'Etape du Tour, La Marmotte and many other large participation sportive that take place across Europe.
Maybe things like the Etape Caledonia and the Dragon Ride come close but even they are only a couple of thousand people at most. Some of these are serious physical challenges (and most likely harder than the marathon) but not really a comparison to the scale of the "event" of the London marathon.0 -
L2B can be a crawl if you don't start before 8 am, especially if there are accidents or other calamities en route. I am hoping Ridelondon 100 will avoid that, but with 20,000 starting in a 2 hour window it might be ahrd.0

Caledonia is 5500 riders.0 -
oh ok, that's bigger than I had though.0

Dragon ride is over 6000 this year.
How many are riding LEL? That's pretty big although it's only once every 4 years. Maybe it's cycling's Olympics (along with PBP) ;-)0
