Just under 600km long, spread over 6 days, including a split road/TTT day, a TT and a mountain stage.
Normally throws up some good racing as these smaller Italian racers usually do.
Startlist is your typical average field with some good names and many smaller teams.
Last year was won by Barta from NetApp which was a pleasant surprise. Sella won the year before and Evans won in 2009.
Stage 1a is in progess:

From other forums I learnt that the teams of 8 were split into two teams of 4 .
The speculation being how to define the team times and winners.
EDIT
50 teams rode and the slowest foursome finished 1min 36 secs down from Accent.jobs a Belgian team.
The times stand for the GC, it would seem.Organiser, National Championship 50 mile Time Trial 19720 -
It's quite interesting - they split the teams of 8 into two and they race like that. Never heard of it before.

How is the team split? Does the team decide which 4 riders go in each team or is it done by GC standing or something?0 -

Looked that way, otherwise certain teams were extremely fortunate with the draw.
Seemed to work OK, although the Astana half with Kessiakoff finished with just the minimum 2 riders.
Wet weather, too, which made me ponder the impact of a puncture on a 3 or 4 man squad.

Would recommend reading the ticker. Great racing today.

Very happy to see Ulissi do well. He has proven to be a great talent and continues to attack and enliven races. I am sure he will get better and better and be competitive at the highest levels.Contador is the Greatest0

Any footage of this? These italian chippers always seem to produce some fun racing."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0

Just watched Stage 2 on Rai Sport 2. Took place under under clear blue skies. Excellent stuff. Riders everywhere. Diego Ulissi a class apart. Moser right out of sorts and in trouble early on the final climb, after Basso had done a lot of the donkey work. Still ended up the only Cannondale rider in the top 10.
Awful day for Vini Fantini.
First, Rabottini had a nasty downhill crash, while leading, then, Fabio Taborre had a mechanical 250 metres from the finish.
Not so bad, except the profile map doesn't show that it was 17% uphill!
Ended up losing over a minute in those few metres.

Very British looking scenery in those photos, they could be racing on country lanes in any hilly areas over here (especially the shot with the gravelly corner that the rider crashed on!).0

lol yes there should be a watershed on these - they only appear after 5pm during the week0 -
Lovely stage to watch, all the highlights above the snowline.
A pretty narrow, technical descent, with snow melt on the roads.
Lucas Euser, so near and yet, so far.
Ulissi right up there until the final km, then seemed to drop back,
only holding the final place in the small group.
Another 5 metres and Santambroggio would have taken Cunego.
Basso seems to be edging towards required Giro form.
ITT today, where I expect young Diego to take more time from his
nearest rivals.
Maybe Konig being the exception."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Love the sunlight in this pic; looks like a dawn finish in Summer, far away from the falling snow outside now.0
