Garmin Edge 500 and it will not connect to my PC

I've got a Garmin Edge 500 and it wont connect to my PC.

I've never had this problem before. I normally plug it in, the Garmin beeps, then a pop up comes up on my PC asking what I want to do with the device. I can then go to Garmin Connect or Strava and the device is found.

Now the Garmin beeps, and charges, but the PC just shows a message:

"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recoginize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"

Also come up as an "unknown device" and windows suggests

"Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."

I've tried to clean the contacts with a bit of electrical contact cleaner. I've just tried it on another PC and it’s the same. I've also performed a 3 button reset. Tried a different cable. Uninstalled everything Garmin on the PC and reinstalled.

Any help appreciated!

He already has tried a new cable

Probably a silly question, but have you restarted the laptop? usually fixes this issue for me

If not, go to system properties/device manager and uninstall everthing under the USB heading, then restart the computer

    Hope ive helped

Try clearing out the cache of your web browser - solved a similar problem with Garmin Connect using Google Chrome yesterday.

Only 3 steps for this I'm afraid.

    1. Try different cable. (done)
    2. Try different USB port.

If it still won't work, there is only:

    3. The device has a fault.

This exact same thing happened to me yesterday, was doing my head in.

Sorted now though. I think the issue was the Mrs had stuck and SD card in the laptop which was confusing it, took that out, turned it all off and on again and it was ok.

I had the exact same problem with my Garmin Forerunner, and tried ALL the solutions; if you Google it you will see you are not alone! Eventually I got in touch with Garmin, sent the unit and the cradle/usb bit back to them and they replaced it for about £40.

    Thanks for replies.

    Tried 3 leads.

    Restarted laptop.

Uninstalled all USB drivers, including the Garmin ones.

    Tried different USB ports.

I emailed Garmin yesterday, so hopefully they'll come back. To be honest I'll be happy to pay £40 for a replacement. I've had it for coming up to 3 years now.

This is a common fault often caused by water getting in to the usb socket and corroding the connection. Will need to go back to the factory. I had this problem on my 800.

I have the same problem with my 500. Device not found by my PC., and there has been an epidemic of this problem within my cycling chums. Tried all the obvious solutions. However, it works perfectly with my Macbook, so I don't think it is the USB port that is faulty. Is it possible the file structure (I'm not a techie) has been corrupted in some way.

There's a whole host of similar threads on this site with the common denominator being "garmin 500/705/800 not connecting".
Mine is a 705 bought from wiggle 18 months ago, so just out of warranty.
Garmin won't replace it, and say they are unaware of a problem with the firmware, even though they are routinely replaced when it occurs and you are within the 12 month warranty period. Their only solution is to pay another £104 for a refurbished one. I'm currently in an email exchange with wiggle trying to get a replacement under the Sale of Goods Act.
My advice is to bombard garmin with complaints until they recognise that a problem exists, and force them to do something about it.
Although garmins profits fell last year, they still make $104million out of fitness products which include cycling computers, so it's not like they can't afford it.

What can happen is that the Mini USB socket over time (with being plugged and unplugged frequently) can suffer from the occasional bent pin.... It happened to my Edge 500.... Have a very careful look at the USB socket on your Edge, the pins should look like this:

    mini_usb_socket_copy.jpg

However, on my Edge 500, the second pin from the left got bent down slightly so the connection was dodgy.... I got a pin and pushed it back up to where it should be so it made a good connection when plugged in. Here's a photo of mine where you can see it's still not in the perfect position....

It's worth looking into this before forking out to get it replaced.

A way around the USB socket not working would be to set the unit to write to the sdcard and then you can take that out and put it in a card reader attached to the computer.

    1. Turn unit off
    2. Small amount of Wd40 on cotton wool bud and carefully clean around USB connection on Garmin Unit.

    Fixed mine.

I was having this problem, though unplugging/replugging and shaking the cable lets it connect again. When I'd managed to connect it I uploaded any previous training I wanted, then deleted the files of the Garmin, haven't had an issue since.

Same problem with my 800 74.40 plus postage to replace with a refurbished unit
They tell me there is no way to upload rides so they are lost as well all in all pretty crap service for what appears a known problem judging by how quick he said it would need to be returned
This will be the last Garmin product I buy if that’s the quality tom-tom for the car and bryton for the bike
Frustrating but they know they have us mugs over a barrel

My mate tried it on his computer with my cable and it didnt work, then tried it with his cable and it did, so looks like its my cable.

Before I sent my old unit off I tried it with 3 cables, my garmin cable, a cable from a digital photo frame and another from an old camera, got exactly the same result with each. So are all mini D cables the same or might the others have fewer pins or something?

    So thats annoying.....

I think I read or heard somewhere that its only guaranteed to work with the cable it comes with. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

If it is the PC you could try using restore points to restore the computer to an earlier time, ive done this several times when ive got this message on my W7 laptop when memory sticks and SD cards stop being recognized by the computer, which can happen if the computer has a lock up for example.
  • Just encountered this problem (USB not recognised) when trying to upload. Tried different leads, re-installed usb drivers and restored computer, nothing worked.

Following advice in the thread looked at pins on my Edge 500 with magnifying glass and saw they were greasy and there was a very tiny object, not visible by the naked eye over one of the pins. Removed it, cleaned the pins with WD40 and all worked well after that.

    Thanks for advice.
  • I am having this problem as well.

I had this problem with my Garmin Edge Touring - occasionally my PC didn't recognise it, but recently it refused to do so at all, despite rebooting, re-installing drivers, etc. I eventually stumbled upon the link below. It's not quite worked as per the instructions on the page - I've found that I have to hold down the lap button before plugging the (switched off) Garmin into the (switched on) PC, but once it's been recognised I release the lap button & everything works as normal.

My Edge is not recognized by my computer:
