I park my baby in a university cycle park with these sort of racks:

I don't currently have a D-lock and want to get one. I'm eyeing up an Abus 54 Granit XPlus. It comes in 23cm or 30cm length. Some people at work just put the D-lock round the bike rack and the bike's top bar, for which the 23cm is obviously big enough. However, I would prefer to put it through frame, rear wheel and bike rack. Any ideas on whether I could do that with a 23cm?

Mine's 23mm and works like that on stands like those, extra secure if you can go through the chain too.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Amazon have a bargain on those locks currently.

Thanks! I'd read reviews etc that said 230mm was normally enough. Amazon currently have the 230mm version for £41 which is a crazy bargain as the best price I'd found online was £67.50! I've ordered that one as the 300mm is still full price.

The lock I'm currently using isn't a D-lock but weighs 1kg. The 230mm D-lock weighs 1.45kg so, bearing in mind all the other stuff I transport to work, the additional weight isn't too bad. :)

I don't have quick release wheels. I currently put my better lock round the back wheel and frame (and stand), and then use a cheap lock to secure the front wheel to the stand separately. That's just a slight visual deterrent really - could probably get through that one with a pair of nail scissors. :?

Wow, the 300mm has gone back to £71.99. I paid £56.29 for it last night!!

I did buy the longer one to lock two bikes together though :)

Dlocks work best when there is no gap between bike or stand so as short as you can get away with

I have a Kryptonite Series 2 Std which I think is 23cm deep. It just fits round a Sheffield stand and through rear wheel & seat stays and is suitably snug. Add a cable looped through the frame and front wheel.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.
  • Short a lock as possible and lock it as low as possible with the key hole facing away from you.
