Worth the effort?

Hi all,

Bit of advice required. Fairly new to road riding, hence I only have a Carrera TdF right now. I have changed a few things from stock (crankset, seat, tyres, etc.), and a friend has now just given me a full Sora groupset (9-spd) and Mavic CXP22 wheels removed from his Specialized Allez.

Do you guys think it is worth putting these on my bike (current groupset is 8-spd 2300), or would I be better off keeping them in the hope that I might one day pick up a better quality frameset?

If I do change the components over, any advice gratefully received on things to look out for (I have all the right tools already) – one thing I notice is that the Sora FD isn't a clamp on, whereas my 2300 is.

Thanks in advance.

might as well put them on, no point leaving stuff in a drawer unless your sure there is going to be another frame to put it on in the near future.

As for the FD you can get one of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=38442

Your 2300 front mech may well work with the Sora shifters anway.
  • The wheels are probably a lot better than the ones that came on the Carrera (can't see what they are from the Halfords site) and I assume that the 9sp cassette is still attached to the Mavics? I would say that it would be worth the effort, especially as you've picked the kit up for free, although you could probably leave the front mech as it is if it would cause problems. Either that or you could buy a clamp on front sora mech for pretty cheap.

You'd also have to check that the crankset from your sora set is compatible with your current BB.

Thanks guys. I know the BB would need changing to take the Sora crankset.

Probably easier just to get a braze on to clamp on adaptor. Though in this crazy world it's hard to be sure that the adaptor would actually be cheaper than a Sora front mech! Still, it does mean you can fit a chainwatcher more easily.

  • Heh! Didn't even know those adaptors existed!

Thanks for the link to the adapter. As luck would have it, for an extra £1 I could get a 105 band-on FD from Chain Reaction so I've gone for that instead.
