Wilier Cento 1 SR - Frame Size

My friend is just about to pull the plug on a Wilier Cento 1 SR, but he is not sure on whether to go for a medium or a small.
The geometry of the wilier is as follows:
Geometry for Small
Seat Tube (c-t) 69.0
Effective Top Tube (eTT) 52.7
Stack (S) 51.9
Reach (R) 38.2
Head Tube (HT) 12.1
Head Tube Angle (HT°) 72.0
Seat Angle (ST°) 74.5
Geometry for Medium
Seat Tube (c-t) 72.0
Effective Top Tube (eTT) 54.1
Stack (S) 53.6
Reach (R) 38.7
Head Tube (HT) 13.7
Head Tube Angle (HT°) 72.5
Seat Angle (ST°) 74.0
He has had a bike fit and his current frame has a stack of 53.3 and a frame reach of 38.2. Saddle height is 735 mm, seatback -68mm and saddle angle 73 deg. He is running already a few spacers (probably around 3 cm. his handlebar stack is 61.8 ), and I believe the head tube on the small frame might be too short. Downside of the medium is that the reach is a tad longer (fixable by a shorter stem - he's on a 110 mm at the moment), and that he would have to cut the seatpost a bit more, affecting resale value. I think he should still go for a medium, unless he goes for a rising stem, mmm.
What would you guys go for? thanks for your help.

It's a thoroughbred racing bike so the head tube is indeed short. For what it's worth, I'm 5' 7" with a 29" inside leg and post bike fit I ride an original Cento Uno small frame with a 110mm stem and the saddle bang in the middle of a 25mm set back seatpost. I have a 1cm spacer under the stem too.0

could I please ask what your saddle height is? and how much of the seatpost you had to cut?0
-
From the top of the saddle to the center of the BB is 69 cm. No idea how much was cut off I'm afraid - I had the bike put together for me.0

I understand, thanks. I am just thinking that there may not be enough seatpost available in the smaller size. the seatpost is 69, and not sure how much there is to the top of the saddle profile (depends on the saddle), 4-5 cms? maybe just enough to cover his saddle height with minimal cutting. I think the medium may still be the most versatile option, but I am not a bike fitter, so if anyone has more experience with bike fitting then please feel free to suggest.0

I recently bought a Wilier Cento 1 SR and had the same dilema only whether to go for the large or extra large. To resolve this I used the excellent services of Sportive Nation (South Manchester) who did a thorough bike fitting as follows:
1. Armed with the geometries of the large and extra large Cento, I took my new commuter bike (Giant Defy 5) for a bike fitting and in doing so they measured me from top to bottom, sat on my commuter and set it up to be a close as possible to the Cento (xl). Using my body measurements, the geometries and how I felt on the commuter it became apparent that the XL was the frame I needed. Also used other bikes from their stock (as close to the large frame as poosible) to confirm this. Their bike fitting experience was excellent so I was extremely confident we had the frame size nailed.
2. I purchased the bike from another retailer (Sportive Nation don't sell Wiliers) where again they offered their view on what frame size I should have and again it was an xl. They had a large frame in stock so I could actually sit on it and ride it, so again confidence was high that I needed an xl. One thing to note, from '1' above I needed 17.5 cm cranks and a 44 cm bar - which didn't come as standard with the xl. However, this wasn't a problem as these could be swapped by ABT only I had to await a few weeks.
3. Once the bike arrived, I went back to Sportive Nation and they again spent the best part of the day setting everything up.
I don't know if this helps but it certainly did me. Spending £3.5k and taking all the risks that you've got the right frame size focused my mind on getting the bike fit service spot on.
Go for it. Brilliant bike, to ride or to simply admire.0 -
I don't know if this helps but I'm a 56cm cannondale and a large Wilier.
6ft 1" tall. I realise there's more to consider than that but any info is good info right?
You'll love the bike. Best purchase I've made in years.
Mrs wasn't happy having the bike in the house so I had to buy something to keep it cosy.Wilier Cento Uno SR 2013 in Fluro Yellow
Cannondale Caad10 2014 in BLACK!!0 -
