Doing a bit of searching the web I can find that the claimed weight for the Defy 3 is just under 10kg. I am thinking its over 10kg. Can anyone confirm the frame weight of the bike.
I am unsure if I want to upgrade wheels and groupset or use the bike as a crap weather bike and upgrade.

My stock '12 model when new weighed 10.95kg the day I bought it.

I've since spent hundreds on it. It now weighs nearly 13kg with lighter wheels! (saddlebag, tools, computers, bottle mounts, tools)

Don't worry about weight too much. 2 x 1000ml bottles full of water weigh 2kg and I can't say I can feel that difference uphill (tested) obviously I'm no pro and I don't race or tt.

Will depend on the frame size, & if there are pedals added, reflectors, bell etc.

Totally agree about not getting too hung up on weight. I've got the 2013 Defy 3 and haven't even though about weighing it!

I easily can lift it with one hand (very scientific!) and given the extra few kilo's I choose to carry with me I'm not sure how much difference it all makes until to get to a certain standard.

I'm guessing that as you are asking about a Defy 3 you are likely to be a novice and if you are like me, concentrate on reducing the weight of the thing sat on the bike - and if you are already there on that front, the bike really flies!
  • Relatively new to cycling at 11 months in now. I have reduced my weight from 16st 2lb to 12st 11lb so not doing too bad in that respect!
I have saddle bag and two water bottles so not too concerned by adding weight with necessary items I'd rather carry the kit than have to get the bus or walk back with a flat in my cleats.

I tend to commute to work 24 mile around 3 times a week and I am looking to join a local club this summer. Maybe spring of 2014 i will treat myself to an all singing and dancing bike and use the defy for commuting and add mud guards.
It's a great bike I've taken 7th place on 3 strava segments with the extra weight of saddle bag, water bottle and rucksack so more to come!

I tried a 2013 Defy 1 and I was really impressed by it, I use size 54 but strangely that model was too long for me and I didnt want to fit a really short stem. Nice and light and very responsive it was too, when I looked at the Defy 3 it felt quite a bit heavier but was a really well made bike.

Why is it crap, because it weights 2kgs more than a £1500-2000 bike. Pull your head out your ass buddy. People need to stop worrying about a bag of sugar and actually start putting less of it in their tea and on their buns FFS lol.

I'm actually considering buying a 20kg bike so I can pass noobs on 7kg bikes up hills and laugh at them sardonically as their fat bellies wibble and wobble all over their integrated carbon handlebars. Worry about that heavy stuff round your guts not 2kgs on your bike.

So a 10kg bike is only fit for crap weather. Up to a few years back dudes were winning tours and riding classics over cobbles on 10kg bikes......this weight thing is turning cyclists into women.

My bike cost £1500, weighs 8.9kgs and i weigh 10st dead which puts me in the lightest on the road bracket. If it weighed 10-12 kgs I'd still be in that same bracket. People seem to forget that the weight of the bike becomes irrelevant when they themselves are grossly over their own lightest possible weight. If your 4st overweight 2 kg on a bike is gonna make zero difference, in fact the heavier the bike the quicker you;l lose the weight.

Even if it is slightly over (varies with frame size) it's still one of the lighter entry level bikes IMHO, and it really will not matter, especially if it's your first bike and you are new to road riding.

I know if I went out and bought a bike that was 1KG lighter, I might be slightly faster in some places, but the difference would be absolutely tiny.

Don't worry about it, get out and ride it.
