my dad is renovating a relic from his younger days
he wants to change the rear derailleur from a suntour one to a new one with non-destroyed jockey wheels.
he bought a veloce 9 speed derailleur which we thought we could bodge on, since its a 5 speed bike (he doesn't want to modernise it and get it cold set) very little of the movement range is used.
this means the limiting screws are about 5-10mm too short. is there any way of getting longer screws?

alternatively has anyone got an old 5-6 speed campy rear derailleur knocking about?

any advice welcome
thanks

Remove the screws and take them to a local fasteners supplier and ask for the same but 5-10mm longer, it should cost you pence. failing that buy yourself a screw pitch gauge for around £5 measure the thread pitch and screw diameter and order what you need online.

I may have a suntour rear mech in a box (without jockey wheels) though I'll have a look.

Is the Suntour mech actually worn? If it works, then it just needs new jockey wheels and those are cheap. It could well be a better mech than the Veloce one anyway!

If it is a Cyclone (one of the nicest mechs ever made and still lighter than most current ones) I'll be happy to take it off his hands!

I've ventured into the box of bits

I have a Suntour Cyclone Mark II with a GT on the lower cage. It only has one jockey wheel though the other may be in the box too.

    It's in perfect working order.

thanks for the replies, i've taken the screws out in the hope of finding a match at the lbs/hardware shop, that should sort it.
my dads old mech is a suntour cyclone gt, the lovwer jockey wheel can be easily replaced but the top one is original and has far too much play in, however removing it has defied two shop mechanics (both my age and probably too young to have ever seen one before). anyone know the trick?
thanks for the offer though pete, we may yet need your spares

Ask on the Retrobike forums - they'll know the specifics of this sort of issue. Worth sorting - it is a better mech than the Veloce one.
