I bought this bike from Russ on this site about 7-8 odd weeks ago, it came as a standard Cannondale Apex 2012, i have now upgraded everything except the brakes, front mech, handlebar stem and shifters, the weight has dropped from 18.08lbs (8.22kg) without pedals to 15.4lbs (6.99kg) without pedals.
The desire to upgrade to SRAM red was there but when i looked at the cost/advantage i just could not justify it, i would only save 160g whilst spending a similar amount to what i have done upgrading everything else plus it would not work substantially better so i opted to change everything else, the biggest gain was changing the Shimano RS10 wheels to a secondhand pair of dura ace C24s.
Upgrades
Dura ace C24 wheelset (1425g)
SRAM PG1070 12-25 cassette (236g)
Outland carbon/titanium skewers (49g)
Continental GP4000S tires (228g)
Michelin Latex tubes (77g)
FSA SL-K Chainset 52/38 (758g including BB30 B/B)
SRAM PC1091 Chain (238g)
SRAM Rival rear short mech (185g)
FSA carbon wrap seatpost (223g)
FSA energy anatomic handlebars (264g)
Selle Italia SLR Team edition Flow saddle (182g)
Shimano Ultegra carbon 2013 pedals (260g)
There were a couple of hiccups along the way, i bought the chainset on ebay and didnt notice the megaexo in the description which adds 80 odd grams plus the descriptions on Chainreactions site showed the saddle and handlebars to be 60 grams lighter then they were but all in all very happy.
I have weighed everything on a Salter digital scale.

I really like what you did. Not to go for bling and instead go bang for your buck. This is one to be ridden!
One thing I've noticed on the pictures is the huge 80mm long valve stems which look a little out of place on the c24s and the turqoise caps tell me they're latex. It's not a hassle I would go through having to pump the tires every time you look at the bike..0 -
Thanks Chris, bought the bike for £800, paid out £780 on top including pedals but the sale of all the items i took off means i spent about £1330 in total so pretty pleased with what i have got for that sort of money...of course if you hunt around i may have got a complete bike with similar or better spec maybe cheaper..but who knows.
Thought about upgrading to rival or force but from what i can see the mechanicals are the same just different materials so works the same just a small amount lighter....just doesn't make sense to me to spend money just for the "kudos" of having a better group, when i can spend the money on items that will actually improve the bike, admittedly some were more for aesthetics but hey its gotta look nice as well
Yeah the tubes and tires were taken off my commuter which i had only recently bought, it has deep rims hence the length of valves...i use that bike every weekday and only had to inflate them every 2 weeks so not really a chore.0 -
Looking good ! Glad it went to a good home !
I've been caught up with moving house so haven't done much to my canyon yet but hopefully will be making some
Improvements next month !
Will put some pics up when it's finished !
On a side note I have been really impressed with the PX brakes, bugger to set up but powerful and very light compared to those apex brakes !

Thanks Russ glad you sold it to me
Looking forward to seeing your canyon.
I certainly looked into changing the brakes but the cost verses weight advantage was better spent elsewhere i changed the pads to swissstop greens which will make a difference. Plus in the last year i have lost around 2 and a half stone (16kg) and will shortly be around 10 and a half stone so i dont give brakes a real hammering anymore!
I will certainly be looking into it again in 6 months when i can justify spending some more unless of course some absolute bargains come up in the meantime.0
