Got a sh@gged Avid Code 5 caliper...
Can I swap for this... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=87334
straight swap? i.e. same lever and hose, fit new olive and bleed??

The Code is a dual piston caliper - the caliper you link to is single piston? Avid have different olives & inserts from Shimano brakes so how these would fit together I'm not sure. Avid also used a hose with a swaged end at the caliper end so not sure how fittings would work. Every make/model of brake is carefully designed to function as a unit - so it is highly likely that you should keep like with like?

    and these reasons would be....
    (what Maringirl said?)
Would ths lever push too much fluid for the caliper to work properly?
Or is it just a 'very bad idea'?
Looking to repair it cheaply, cos am hoping for a new steed later in the year...

the first one is the seals are not compatible.

so end of. the rest does not matter.

    any, all take your pick.

one uses DOT brake fluid and the other uses Mineral.

the seals are not cross compatible.

    it will not work.

As Nick says, the seals in a Shimano caliper are designed for mineral fluid, not DOT and will likely fail in short order, the olive dimensions may not be the same, and the piston diameter may not be similar enough so as to match the ratio the Avid lever is designed for, but I doubt anyone will have tested that as the seal issue is the main one.

    Get an Avid caliper!
