When you install the rear wheel into the dropouts do you put the quick release skewer through the hub shell before, or after installlation of the wheel?

it depends and makes no difference.

    Either surely...both is difficult!

Most standard wheel/frame combo's you leave the QR through the wheel but loose so it doesn't get in the way, works fine as long as you either have both springs or neither, one pushes the QR across and makes it a PITA!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I have a feeling he meant it can be both of those options, never at the same time.

and many you need to remove the Acorn as it catches on the Mech hanger.
