I'm participating in a charity ride on the 1st of June in which we will be riding from Tower Bridge, London to our office at Leicester(110 miles ish) the problem is I broke my collarbone 2 weeks a go and the question I have is 14.5 weeks going to be enough recovery time or am I clutching at straws?

Any advice would be great, cheers lads.

Wiggins broke his collarbone in the first week of July and was racing in the Vuelta in September, so yes, it can be done ;)

Ricey83, you work for SGP?? Good luck and I'm sure the bone will be OK in that timescale.

Yeah I work at SGP how did you hear of the event?

My plan is to get on a turbo after 6 weeks and if I can manage then I should hopefully make it

Having broken my collar bone twice, it will all depend how well it heals. My first one didn't heal very well, which meant I broke it 6 months later doing some gymnastics!

Not a lot they can do for a broken collar bone, other than a figure of 8 bandage and a sling, just take it easy and recuperate (your fitness might be down though for the ride)

You're going the wrong way! Are you sure you don't want to do it the other way around and join the Hero Ride on 2 Jun?

Ricey, I work for Imtech Smith so saw the email sent out to all suppliers about sponsoring the team.

Would you be able to sit on your bike ( on the Turbo ) and pedal none handed just to keep the legs ticking over??

Why not ask your consultant specifically about a fitness programme?

When I broke my collarbone I was given the all clear to use a turbo after only 4 days. A lot does depend on the nature of the break and whether surgery is required but most folks are clear to start moderate exercise using a sling (flip the step if you find that helps take the pressure off when leaning, etc.). I continued to turbo 3-4 times a week and then got the all clear to go back on my bike after about 10-11 weeks, but it was bloody painful and took a lot of physio and self discipline with the stretches, etc. I did laugh because my consultant said "it is ok to go on your bike but just don't fall off", I replied "I wasn't trying to fall off when I broke my collarbone".

I kept most of my fitness, just lost some of the endurance stuff because I found it hard to do more than 2 hours on the turbo (managed a 3 hour session once I think).

You might find some guidance here, at the end of the thread:

Ha! Small world Plato! I'll get on the turbo tonight once I have made a few minor repairs to my bike. I think it'll be fine but I'm definately not ready for the roads yet as the bumps will go straight through me.

I've only been off the bike for 5 weeks so hopefully I've not lost too much fitness...

Back at the hospital on Monday so I'll see what the consultant recommends.
