On a bike, no chance. Where would the power source come from?
Your pocket is the best holder for your phone, you only need it to make the call of shame!.
Get a GPS and a K Edge mount for everything else.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
I use a Wahoo bike case (iphone 3 or 4) which attaches to the stem (or elsewhere) and has an optional additional battery pack which clips underneath to give and additional 150% battery life.
Sounds like what you are describing but I'm unsure if it handles other smartphones.
(I also have the speed/cadence sensor to make it a ride computer)
I am probably about to sell it if that sounds relevant for your needs.0 -
+1 on the pocket thing. You don't want to be distracted looking at texts and it's very vulnerable up on the bars.
Mine goes in a sealed plastic bag, set to gps my ride and it's in my pocket unless I need it.0 -
Slip case in sandwich bag in back pocket. Smarth phones are too expensive and not robust enough for handlebar mounting.0

I mounted mine on the bars with an iPhone specific RAM mount. It was sturdy and worked well.
I was never worried about the phone being on the bars. An accident that would have me picking up black plastic for the rest of the day may have damaged my phone but that would be the least of my worries.
Eventually I gave up on using it due to the battery life (Ok, except whenr using Cyclemeter - great battery life because it rarely polls the GPS chip so worse that useless data collection  ) and bought a Garmin 800 about a year ago.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

When I was at the London Bike show, I met the owner who gave me one of these as my wife wanted one for holding her iTouch when she is on the turbo.
I have to admit that these are one of the coolest strongest mounts that I have come across, so much so that I am going to buy one for myself, Amazon are doing it and I have just found them on fleabay here

Not a big fan these things but for home use on the rollers that does look pretty good indeed, cheers for the linkPain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0 -
I use something similar to the one above but from Ultimateaddons from Amazon. It is one of the only ones around for the iphone 5 and i can pair it with my wahoo low energy bluetooth heart rate monitor. It is a bit bulky on the bike, but i can put up with that compared to the cost of a Garmin 500 / 800. I agree with other posts re short battery life of previous smartphones, but these have improved loads in recent years. I am also looking forward to the fall in price of the Wahoo rflkt so that i can put my phone in my pocket but still use its processing power etc.0

Can you pm / post a link?
I need something to hold my iphone 5 while on the turbo - nothing fancy protection wise, just so I can watch it.

I've just bought the ibike iPhone 5 holder. Pretty good, but there's a knack to getting the phone out of it!
