Quick question regarding Bottom Brackets

I've just been on bike-discount.de website. They list Shimano Bottom Bracket Hollowtech II XTR FC-M970 and Shimano Bottom Bracket Hollowtech II XTR FC-M980. What's the difference between fc-m980 and fc-m970 bottom bracket?

I thought any Hollowtech will work with any Hollowtech, is that right?

I believe Shimano did do some work to improve the seals on the M980 to improve their lifespan/reliability. Fit is the same.

Historically Shimano haven't had great reports with regards to longevity of the BB's, although personally, I haven't found this to be the case. I have run these and their press-fit version and have found them to last about as long as you can reasonably expect a BB on an MTB to last at this price point!

I think they only get these types of comments about reliability due to the inherent fact they are out board so are more prone to stuff getting in than internal cartridge bbs
