New road surfacing

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this,
Few days ago, I was doing a different route to one I normally take. This one had a fairly new surface along the cycle path (bear in mind this is Germany where they give a damn about cyclists) As soon as I was riding on it, I felt as though I was cycling through treacle. When I got to an older part of the road I managed to pick up speed.
Has anyone come across this type of tarmac in the UK?

The surface looked like any other part of the road, just clean black tarmac. Its not very new, just as in its been done in last 6 months or so. It just felt very sluggish cycling over it like my tyres were gripping it too well. It jut felt energy sapping. As soon as I got onto grey concrete again I could pick up speed on the same gradient. There have been a few roads resurfaced around my area and this is the only one that feels weird. A whole road was done I frequently ride on and it feels awesome to ride down but looks exactly the same as this sticky stuff. Baffles me to be honest.0

Baffles me too - not seen a surface like that. :? Where do you ride? The moon? Area 53?0

They don't seem to use tarmac here in the UK any more. Not where I live anyway. Every time they resurface a road it's like stone chippings and glue or something... It's like loose gravel when it's first laid.
You definitely get different textures to tarmac though. I know this from skateboarding. Especially in the summer, it can get very soft. I guess it's to do with how it's mixed, but it's not all equal.0 -
We seem to have a mix of road types from good old concrete to tarmac to mixed with stone chips. We do have one or two local sections that are not new but not really old either that do seem to just suck the tyres. TBH I thought it was just me but a few mates have commented on the same sections feeling slower.Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0

Might have been cold mix asphalt that hadn't fully set.0

Sounds like a headwind0

Is it like that health and safety tarmac they use in children's play areas?my isetta is a 300cc bike0

They have patched the road around our way due to the pot holes etc. We now have ribbons of tarmac that feel corrugated as you ride over them. Smooth finish but not rolled properly flat if you know what I mean.0

Yup not rolled flat properly rings a bell here too. We have had quite a bit of Tarmac patching here in recent weeks and it has been quite good. Unfortunately potholes are developing at the edges of the patching which is not so good...0

I understand what you are saying , but this is a whole road section that is smooth to ride over, it just seems to grip the tyre surface in a way that makes the rolling resistance more than on concrete. No bumps or ripples, just difficult.0

Perhaps asphalt with a higher amount of bitumen in it? Would explain why it felt sticky. Working on building sites, the roads do seem sticky when first laid but doesn't last more than a day or two when used. Strange, especially this time of year when it tends to be cooler.0
