Mrs GOAMI has given the green light for new pedals and shoes. She thinks they are a necessity for riding the bike. (Not arguing with her!)
She also suggests that trackie bottoms billowing in the wind are not the done thing on a road bike, especially as spring is due upon us. (again, no hint of an argument)

Over to the experienced members!

What would you recommend as good choices for pedals and shoes? Bear in mind I'm a tight ar$ed Yorkie, I don't want to spend oodles on shoes!

Would it be safe to say the Shimano M520's are a good pedal choice? Obviously I'm considering the MTB shoe route as I would need to be able to walk about easily in the shoes as well. Would be nice to get MTB type shoes that have a resemblance to road shoes (if you get me!)

My Shimano MTB shoes have done about 12k miles and only the inner heel is showing any wear. Really comfy too. One thing I'd say is to buy from a shop where you can get the right size, not online. If you buy shoes and pedals at the same time ask for a discount.

I started on M520's and now have A520's on the new bike. I prefer the A520's but never had any problems with the M's. I have Bontrager shoes and they're excellent. Dhb shoes from Wiggle tend to get good reviews on here. I bought running tights from JD Sports for £15, wear em over my bibs and have cycled all winter and have never been too cold.
  • What about the double sided pedals? One side clipless, the other side flat to allow nipping down the shops.
Could the quick shop excursion be done with M520's or are they out and out clipless pedals?

I don't think you can go wrong with the DHB shoes from Wiggle.

I had a pair for the last 18 months or so as my first foray into clipless and I think they are excellent.
As for pedals http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-pd-m520-pedals/ do the job just fine and are plenty cheap.
