So, the sure sign a trend is dying is when I get into it - but have decided to convert the old 531 into a single speed (having just bought DT shifters for it, ahem  )

Was going to use one of those cassette converter kits (with spacers, etc) and probably keep both front rings for now - anyone done this and can recommend me a set to buy?

It's just a hill. Get over it.

What do you mean by 'keep both front rings?'

If you are s/s there is no slack in the chain (due no derailleur to take up the slack) so no way to change between the two front rings - so you may as well take off the one you aren't using...

    yup

single speed chain ring (optional) and new chain ring bolts which are thinner (ebay), your current ring will work (boom boom)

superstar components for s/s kit (the spring version of the tensioners are more hassle than the solid arm versions)
that is for freehub's, to go s/s on a screw on hub means you need to re space the rear axle or buy a s/s hub such as a bmx/track hub

and you can run 5-6-7 speed chain on it (cheap)

    approx 2:1 ratio for pedaling

An old 531 frame probably has sloping dropouts so you won't need a tensioner.

The gusset SS kits are good, and the spacers are different widths, so allow 2 positions for the sprocket, to help with chain line.
