GPS problems with phone

I have just changed my HTC Desire for a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. I was using Strava on my HTC which worked without a problem, but with the Samsung it`s rubbish as the GPS keeps dropping out so you don`t track your full ride.
Has anybody had the same problem with the Galaxy S3 Mini?

Have a similar problem with an S2. Strava was fine until the latest update, then it went crap. Losing GPS, strava running very slow on the phone amongst other things. Tried another phone and its the same there, so it might just be strava that's causing the problems.
  • I reported the problem to Strava & they sent me a fix..download GPS Status app & use this to reset the GPS on the phone. You can see how many satellites the phone is picking up with the app, picking up as many as fifteen at any time but it still failed. Strava say they can`t help with anymore.....they think it`s a problem with the device!!!
I have just tried using Run Keeper app & this seemed to work ok but you don`t get the same info as Strava.
Going to keep trying Run Keeper for a few days & see how that goes. I`ll keep you informed.
  • A great little app for recording your rides is MyTracks. You can save to various formats which you could upload to Strava (or anywhere else) later.

Some phones just don't have as good a GPS reception as others. Funny enough, I used to have an HTC desire and I found the GPS on it wasn't nearly as good as the Lumia 800 I got to replace it.

if you dont want to spend money on gps units like garmin edge a reasonably cheaper solution would be an external gps unit that connects the phone via bluetooth. their gps capabilities and stamina are superior to phones and they dont lose connection easily.

Willow are these any good? I really like the sound of comparing yourself against a PB ride, especially on a segment (if that's possible). Funnily enough my cheapo £8 bike computer is on the blink at the mo!

OP try using a simple GPS logger (which you can export rides and upload to strava once you get home).
  • Is that computer the halfords one you got a free bike with it?
Oh, changing my tiagra brake blocks in a couple of weeks time, are you still after a allen bolt thingy?

Yeah mate they are worth it. I got mine from Halfords for £72 thats with my 10% Halfords voucher from British Cycling and Halfords current offer of money off Cycling gear. Also it's quick and easy compared to your usually Cycle computer less wires and sensors etc.

I'm gonna work on a strategy to justify the purchase. Cheers pal!
  • I been using "RunKeeper" app on my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini for a week now without any problems. I`m putting the problem down to the the "Strava" app....

  • Just bought a Samsung S3 Mini, it has a major problem with Strava. Not sure if it is the phone or the app. But I would steer clear of Samsung S3 Mini if you are a regular user of Strava. It is completely useless. GPS tracks less than 50% of the ride. My wife bought the same phone so I tried hers and got the same problem so it is not just a bad build. I rang Samsung about the poor GPS performance, but they just said it is likely to be a problem with the app! My old HTC wildfire tracked my route fine on Strava!!!
