Avid Juicy XT shifters handlebar setup

Putting my new brakes on my bike I don't seem to be able to get them at the angle on the handlebars I like. The reservoir on the lever hits the XT shifter which is underneath it. I can probably get used to it but I wanted to angle the levers down a bit. As far as I can see it's just not possible. But I thought I'd check on here before just leaving it how it is in case there's something really obvious.
From photos I've seen online of a Juicy lever with XT shifter it doesn't seem to be the same problem. However, I have an older M740 shifter, maybe that is shaped differently to the newer models and that's why it's a problem?

All you can do is move things around a bit, or take the bit off that shows you what gear you're in.I don't do smileys.
