I have my first 85 mile sportive in August, and I am going to need some comfortable bib shorts. Can anyone recomend a pair for around the £40 mark? A friend said he bought a pair in decathlon for £30 and they do a good job if you get the thicker orange pad. Can anyone vouch for these?

I have looked at

Funkier
Shutt VR
Cube Attain SL Disc
Giant CRS 2.0

Just to help you out on a quality prospective, I have 3 pairs of Funkier Bib tights, the zips on the legs on all 3 pairs do not work from new, they come open. I E-Mailed Funkier and have heard nothing in 3 months. I know its not the same thing but not a great product or customer service. Chainreaction were great and sorted things on one pair however that pair went the same as well.

What size are you? There are some very good deals on Campagnolo bibs around at the moment (50-60% off) but not many sizes left.

DHB bibs from Wiggle have a very good reputation too.
  • I can vouch for the decathlon orange/black pad (level 7).
Mine have done a couple of thousand of miles and are still in great condition.
No problem with 100km plus rides.

I will -1 the Scotts I have a pair and don't find them very good for longer rides.
That's the problem with bib short advice I guess. It's all subjective. :)

This seems interesting. They are very cheap, so that keeps the wife happy

Not half as happy as the sight of you parading around the house in them .... I hasten to add that I am a fellow user of Bib shorts. One learns at an early stage in cycling to wear what is comfortable and practical and ignore the strange looks and funny comments of the public at large.

We won't go into the leg shaving bit .... (but at least we have the company of competitive swimmers and triathletes here).

If you can spend a bit more to on cyclestore and get the cipollini bins very discounted. I bought four pairs and they are great. Crashed this weekend do down to three already. Bargain though to 60 odd quid I think from 150 odd.very comfortable. Cheap stuff is rarely any good.

I'd recommend the endura fs260pro bib shorts. On second pair (first pairripped to shreds in an incident with the road) and they're very comfortable. Try to get the ones with the thicker orange (600 series) pad though for even more comfort.RRP is quite a lot, but both times I bought new from a bike shop's discount eBay store for £35 - you may have to wait as they only get a few pairs in at a time though.

Sorry to briefly divert the thread - did you find the reflective logos on the FS260pro bibs come away from the material over time? Mine have and it's put me off buying a new pair from them (I've tried to follow the washing instructions as given).

Sean, I believe you're in Belfast too. Might be worth taking a spin over to Dave Kane's in Ballyhackamore, the clothes shop rather than the bike shop (the one nearer town, in other words). They've got lots of nice stuff, much of which isn't listed on their website. They're about the most helpful bike shop staff for miles around, too.

(And, apropos of not a lot, I used to work with a chap of the same name about 12 years ago. I wonder if it was you...)
