My mate has a Diamondback outlook and he wants to upgrade his gears from 7 speed cassette to 9 speed,i know he will need casstette, rear mech and shifter and chain, but will it be straight forward or is the bike not worth the hassle,he doent really have the funds for new bike,
some one has told him he would need a new wheel also,is this true??

thank

Depending on what the hub is he may need a new wheel and possibly a new frame.

What is the hub spacing? 135mm?

Does the cassette have a 4.5mm fitted before it on the hub?

Doesn't really help, you need to determine if the rear gears are freehub with cassette or spin on freewheel, if it is a freehub you need to look for a spacer behind the largest gear.

If it is a freehub and does have a spacer then a 9 speed conversion is possible, if it's a freehub and has no spacer it's not possible without a new rear wheel, ditto if it's a freewheel.

Not if he's going to be paying a shop to do it, for sure!

You can get 8-speed freewheels, but don't think you'll find nine.

Depending on the axle length, you might just be able to pop on that 8 speed freewheel and change the shifter to 8-speed too( You'd have to check derailleur compatibility, though).

21 gears is plenty, however, and you might find by swapping out chainrings and sprockets you can extend the range of gearing a bit without increasing the number of gears, depending on what he has already.

For instance if the current lowest gear is 24T front, 28T rear, then a swap to a 22T front, 34T rear is going to make a big difference when climbing. You might need to do some clever juggling of sprockets to get a workable 7-speed freewheel with a 34, though... and again, derailleur capacity and clearance could potentially be an issue... Sounds like a fun project, though.

No, you need a feehub to convert to 9 speed.
