Garmin 800 getting confused

used my 800 for the 1st time at wkend, very impressed, until it got lost at matching green in essex. it kept saying off course, even though i wasnt, and then stopped giving 'full text' directions or any directions (on screen/and beeps) rather on the map it just showed my course and me following it with go west/east.north or whatever as i fiollowed it. i then got fed up with this and reset the course which fixed it, but does anyone have any idea how this happened, im certain i didnt inadvertently press anything to turn off the 'proper' navigation instructions.

was it becuase it thought i had gone off course (despite it clearly showing me on course on the map) and is it likely to have screwed up cos it lost signal?

should that be on or off? i thnik it was off?

it seemed when i went off course, it never recognised me going on course again, and turn by turn guidance turned itself off somehow.
