Not long to go now for me and my mate when we tackle LeJog on 6th April. Was contemplating bulk buying some of the protein rich flapjack that CNP etc make. I've seen what I thought was a reasonable offer here - http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/? ... iew=search

but a bit confused as one person gives them 5/5 and then another says they aren't nice.

Anybody else recommend them or alternatives. We will also be taking with us Soreen and maybe the off banana plus gels.

I have always made my own protein bars in the past (when I used to do weights), they are a lot cheaper and usually taste just as good if not better as you can play around with the ingredients.

I can see that it might be easier to take the pre packaged ones on a tour though. Can't say I've tried the ones you've linked too unfortunately.

If you fancy having a go yourself there are hundreds of recipes on line. Most involve some whey protein, some porridge oats and various dried fruit and nuts. Also if you make them with almond milk as opposed to regular milk (if required in the recipe) they last for ages and should be fine to carry around with you. Just a thought anyway!

Depends how you're doing it. If you're supported and going for long days and trying to keep up a fast pace, it may well be worth taking something convenient like that.
Personally, when I tour I'm carrying quite a lot, so not at all worried about how fast I'm going, and don't bother with expensive energy bars/gels/drinks, but simply stop every couple of hours and get some solid food from a cafe/newsagent.

done LEJOG in 2010 and really enjoyed it. Me and my friend did the 1100 mile route in 9 days and used a TREK 4.9 and he used TREK 4.5, also carrying panniers which carried 1 set of shorts and T.shirt and a pair of trainer for after we had done our days riding. Wash shaving kit, sunglasses and mobile phones to update the family and friend how we was doing.

The only food we carried was the food for the day which we would buy in the morning and this was peanut butter and nutella sandwhiches (rich in carbs and sugar) which helps reduce Cortisol levels (Stress hormones that feed off white muscle tissue) and increase insuling levels. Also we found these thin biscuits at a garden center which had poppy seeds on them covered in honey and I was obsessed with them very light snack but easy to eat with each 1 containing enough energy for an hour or so before popping another one down.

At no point did we take power foods or drinks but stuck to normal high carb sugar foods which normally we would not eat. He owns a Health Gym and I am a nutritionist and my initial plan was to take power foods etc but after the years of mountain biking climbing and hiking we have done we basically knew we was just being luxurious and decided that these was not really that important.

    2 things

1: power foods are fine and obviously wont hurt you but the cost for this will be noticed and i would avoid protein bars and instead focus on energy bars if you was to go down this route.

2: unless your really trying to go for a good fast time I wouldn't worry about taking the cleanest of foods and instead enjoy yourself have snacks and enjoy some of the fatty foods on offer during your trip. We stopped at some great fish and chip shops and also some lovely burger vans and this was what made the run so enjoyable not being to serious about food intake. Obviously food does have an effect on out put and energy release but unless your riding for times I wouldn't take the food intake to serious (within reason of course).

Really hope you enjoy and I am jealous as I remember all the prepping I was doing before it ha. enjoy keep us all posted. goodluck

Carrying protein bars on LEJOG is a daft idea. You'll pass numerous shops every day so it takes very little forethought to make sure you have food to keep you going. I did a brisk unsupported LEJOG a few years back (4.5 days) and bought regular food as I went. It's not a race after all so stopping for 5 minutes to eat a sandwich or a wedge of soreen is no big deal.
    More problems but still living....

In the beginning, man had to carry his own food. Then a light shone from above and lo, God created bakeries and he declared this was good. Now man could stop at countless places for sausage rolls, bacon sarnies, cakes and all sorts.

Wonder if there the same recipe as the CNP elite ones that carry team sky and british cycling logos at nearly £37 rrp per box of 12 , really makes you wonder as the above site has them for £15 less is this another case of the great cycling rip off ?

Hi, when weight training I used Maximuscle Progain bars in mixed berry flavour. IMO they taste good and absolutely do the job they are designed for.

Please note, I have no affiliation to Maximuscle. I used those bars for years though and they are very good when weight training.

Anyone who pays £37 for 12 flapjacks deserves to be ripped off.

The reason for wondering about the Flapjack was just to have something to eat whilst riding and they still work out cheaper than getting a flappjack at a local coffee shop. Our plans are hopefully a stop mid morning, lunch and then one in the afternoon. As the 7th day is from Helensburgh to Inverness ( 155miles ) and we have other long days too, it was just a thought that it would be easy to keep a couple in our back pockets each day.
And no, we aren't going for records - I'll leave that upto our Local Bike Shop guy who I believe has the record of 48 hours.

As for a blog for others to follow. Here it is - http://cyclemadness.blogspot.co.uk/

This is what me and the other half did last year, stopped and ate everywhere we wanted, pubs, cafe's, McDonalds, Pizza Hut (all you can stomach lunch!). We kept a food diary for the 10 days of riding.

    12 flapjacks

Equal parts of syrup, brown sugar, butter melted together
add dried fruit of your choice (apricots for me )
mix in value poridge oats until you have a post-crete type mix (thick concrete)
squidge in to a baking tray, bake for 20 mins until brown.

    cut up when dry/cool.

    cost about 2 quid.
