Strava reporting

Hi,

Near me is the Bristol - Bath cycle path which 100s of people use for commuting and leisure rides. Now 99% of people use this path in a responsible way and many of us use Strava to record our times/compete with each other/motivate etc. I know Strava divides opinion but many people do enjoy it.

Now some do-gooder has reported to Strava every single segment on the 13 mile path as dangerous. Now I appreciate that people do walk on the path but if a wide tarmac path with no cars on and (for the most part)no remotely sharp bends is dangerous then this person must live in cotton wool.

I have just commuted in this morning, left earlier then usual and felt good. Path was clear (as early morning) so put some speed down and knocked some time off my best, however none recorded by Strava (at least to compare to my other times) whilst they investigate these dangerous segments!

Made me mad so wanted a rant!

Just make private segments and you can compare your bests.

I thought you can still compare your own rides even if a segment is marked as hazardous. Otherwise you could always create a private segment.

I think a big orange plaquard with the Strava logo and 'Segment START' might be in order on the path :)

    lol

I know I could do private segments but just bit of a faff when lots of segments already set up by others. Also it's nice to see how I'm doing compared to others (never mind KOM - can I make top 50!!! Most of the segments have 700-800 riders on them)

Will wait and see what Strava do. If they stop all the segments then I'll just make private ones. Hoping Strava will see sense and reinstate them all....we will see

From my experience they won't reinstate them. I'd set up your own private one.

If people set up new segments on same part of road does anyone know if these will be 'ok' (until someone reports them at least!)

If so within a week all the segments will be recreated (as I said 100s of cyclists use route every morning)

Not sure. Segments I've seen gone have stayed gone though.

Presumeably it's being reported by another cyclist who uses Strava. No?

Or possibly a runner I guess, do they see the same segments on a run as on a ride?

Don't think many walkers would necessarily go onto Strava just to report dangerous segments.

Pretty sure you have to have ridden it to be able to report it as dangerous.
  • That's true, you do have to have ridden the segment to be able to flag it as hazardous.
When you do flag a segment, you do have to give a reason.

Can't see the problem here.if the path has a mix of users then its not the place for strava.for every carefull cyclist there's going to be an idiot and there must have been some kind of incident to make someone want to report to strava.don't forget the opposite of a dogooder is a dobadder.
  • I use the Bath/Bristol bike path and it is unsuitable for Strava, I say this as someone who likes and uses Strava. The ONLY way to use that bike path is slowly and carefully. Dogs, walkers, wet leaves and the greatest and most annoying hazard other cyclists who scream towards you two/three abreast or head down before pulling over at the last minute. There are lots of great testing Strava segments around Bath and Bristol. The bike path is no place for them. (I didnt flag them though).

I get your point about being careful and understand your reasons. It's just frustrating that 95% of cyclists use the path responsibly and slow down when walkers are around but at 6am it's very quiet and you can see far ahead. I suppose my issue is the poor behaviour of a few spoil it for the rest. Ah well!

There's a local bikepath to us too - its great to avoid the main roads but it isn't the place for Stravas. Walkers, dogs, other users. Just that there would be segments would encourage stupid cyclists that little bit more. Save the speed stuff for better areas with less vulnerable users around.

I agree. Segments on shared paths are a bad idea. I probably wouldn't bother reporting it myself but I'm on the side of the person who did report them in this case.
