Don't know what to get.

Once again the reason that the spec is lower is because we are comparing a 26 to a 29. 29ers are more expensive, therefore for the same money you will get lower spec.
Have you asked about the 26er treks?My Yeti ARC - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129091750 -
Not with all bikes though, many Scotts are the same for both. Such as this:

Same for the 26 and 29er.0 -
There are always exceptions. But in general a similarly specced 29er will retail higher than its 26er counterpart. My Yeti ARC - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129091750

In the shop he compared a £1500 26er and that 29er and said that 29er had better forks and breaks
That scott looks good does that tick all the boxes?0 -
The Scott is a decent machine. Still not cheap, but at least has compression damping in the fork, some good level Shimano kit and a good weight. But compare to this:

If you have £750 upwards look at Canyon, Just bought a Yellowstone 5.9 including P&P £750 spec is outstanding, not going into a argument over what Halfords sell, but if you look at the Boardman website then see the range you know what I am talking about, same with any of the other "EXCLUSIVE" ranges, and besides if you have a look at some of the bike mechanics in Halfords do their work, I'm staying well away0

Bit of a Halfords fan here.
I was in a Halfords today - small branch in Wimbledon, with just two staff, and more bike area than car stuff. One chap was new, but very eager, the other was very knowledgable and busy with a wheel build.
I went in for car stuff, added a £1 tube out of the bargain basket and chatted for a while.
My bikes have never been in any workshop, but I came away impressed with the guy in there. He knew his stuff and was a bike nut.
What people seem to forget is they are aimed at the DIY type, and for prices and selection of general car maintenence stuff they can't be beaten.
Some rather tasty bikes as well. Plus, TBH, some nasty stuff as well.I don't do smileys.
