quick strava segment creation question

New segments can be created that I know, but to create a truly fresh new segment it appears no other segment must run through it, am I right.
I created one last night and today happened to ride through it so put the hammer down, was only .4 of a mile, I expected me to be the only one listed on the table, however because others have ridden through this, then seems the leader board for my segment is now populated with all those who have ridden the longer segment through it, ie starts before mine and ends after mine. Is it not possible to create true new segments even though maybe different distances within existing ones.

Errr... No. Fact is those other riders have completed the segment you created too, so naturally they'll be listed.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

No you can have many crossovers - infact I've set one up that is 3 in one - one is private, just for me, one is mile long that stops stupidly near a junction and the third is the same as 2 but stops way before the junction - only on the private one, obviously, do I and I alone appear, onthe others I'm either 4th or 15th - just behind the man on his mobility scooter. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

bit poop really then. Eventually segments will cover most likely wanted sections and we will all be stuck with them.Team4Luke supports Cardiac Risk in the Young0

If there are ones you don't like seeing, you can always hide them. I don't really see how having lots of segments out there can be regarded as a problem!0

I think you've misunderstood how the leaderboards work. It's not just everyone who has ridden the longer segment that's on the leaderboard for your new segment, but everyone who's ridden that piece of road.0 -
If you don't want to see others on your segment delete create it again and make it private. Then just your time will be listed. It will appear on your ride with a locked symbol next to it.0

Or leave it public and do your analysis using the My Results tab. Or were you trying to be KOM on an obscure segment that nobody else would ride?0

no, what I wanted to do, was set up some new segments for my club mates so we can just have a bit of extra fun on a club ride afterwards, using my rides that I have on there I will just choose some parts and create various segments, doesn't matter what they are or where, flat, uphill not bothered. I realise others will ride through them and hence can't be restricted other than to Private. It was just that the first test one I set up which was only a sprint for .4mile came up with all those who had ridden through my segment, it was just a surprise to me that I couldn't set up a truly new unridden segment. Thus seems then a new segment will be populated with riders who have ridden through it but on not actually riding that new segment, in fact then there will be no distinguishment to show who has and who hasn't ridden the newly created segment ? Seems daft to me.
Eventually then we will all be stuck with existing segments already set up even though you may not want those start/finish points.Team4Luke supports Cardiac Risk in the Young0 -
Say we have a road with 5 points along it that are interesting for someone
A
B
C
D
E
A > E is from one significant junction to another
B is a junction off to another popular road
C > D is your club sprint spot
So we probably have segments from A to E and from E to A
You have made C to D
I have made A to B, B to A, B to E and E to B
Firstly how can strava tell who is only interested in the C > D club sprint?
Everyone riding from (or who have ever ridden) A to E will show up on the full segment, my A>B and my B>E segments and your C>D segment.
I'm really confused as to why this is a problem. If you are only interested on C > D just look at that one.
And the roads will never become full up with segments. Say another club one day decides it wants to sprint from your C point to half way between D and E... well they just create that segment.0 -
There's also an option to display only people you are following or clubmates. That might give you what you want, although it will still show times from before you created the segment.0
