It finally happened...

Ah well, I suppose it was inevitable given the combination of newbie status, increasing over-confidence and the general state of our roads these days.... Just had my first "off" whilst out training this morning.
Rounding a corner which contained 1)adverse camber 2)change from downhill to uphill 3) greasy early morning road surface 4) nice shiny metal manhole cover
Add them all together complete with the obligatory lorry driver/spectator at the corner and there you have it!
Result was one destroyed helmet (secretly quite please so that I can now get a new colour matched one and my wife can't raise an objection!) one "broken in" jersey, one destroyed mitt, the usual scraped/bent shifters etc and an impressive array of road rash and bruising.
In the aftermath of the crash my first instinct was to check the bike over! I now feel like I have joined the club! Long may it continue...

Ouch, sorry to hear that
I would say that just turning on a manhole cover was your downfall though.
Anything metal is best avoided unless in a straight line, regardless of other factors.
Try not to let it knock your confidence, just avoid turning on metal.
How big a hit did the helmet take? Bet you were glad you had it on

The front wheel slipped sideways onto the grid so I had no chance to recover. Helmet is totalled, outer shell badly cut up and inner structure broken right through. Still took a little knock to the temple so god only knows what would have happened without it, possibly an ambulance ride? I still do a double take when I see people out without one :? Was out with club yesterday and there's one or two guys who do not wear them.
Never really found out why and always assume its because they like to be different and think they are special.
I know of people who have been badly injured though not wearing one, and would have otherwise walked away from it.
I have banged my head hard enough (when not cycling) to know its a bad idea!0 -
One of our guys on yesterday's club run got a scary speed wobble on a downhill at about 35mph, came off the bike into a hedge, few scratches and bruises only fortunately, very lucky.0
