Advice Needed After Long Ride

3rd ride on my new Giant Defy 1 - I planned to do 38 miles today on a flat route, but ended up doing 44 after taking a wrong turn. It's my longest ride so far and my legs are knackered after a hard ride. I thought about doing the extra 6 miles to make it my first half century but the legs/rear said no.
Do I have a rest day as normal tomorrow (to allow the muscles to repair themselves I guess) or do a recovery ride (to get the waste products out of the muscles). I've seen both mentioned on this forum - which is best?
I'm feeling it in my legs a lot more than normal.
As for the ride itself... fantastic sunny weather with only a little wind. I went out a little too fast/hard doing an avg speed of 19mph for the first 17 miles. I ended up with an avg speed of 17.1mph for the whole route as I was pointing into the wind more on the way home. I'm really happy with this after just 6 months of cycling - I'm 38 so no spring chicken.
The 6 months of training with the old mountain bike has certainly reaped it's rewards (only 50 miles a week spread over 3 hard rides).
I was also really happy with my average cadence of 90 having worked on this recently.

Rest up tonight and go out again tomorrow and nail that 50! What's the worst that can happen? Just start off steady and keep going, preferably riding with someone so it doesn't seem such a long way, not that 50 miles will seem like a long way to you soon.
Keep going, well done. I'm 57 BTW0 -
40 mile recovery ride will sort you out.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

Well done, you're legs will stop aching as you get more cycling fitness.
If you've gone hard then additional protein helps the muscles repair. A light recovery ride always helps (keep heart in zone 2). A rest day (including the recovery ride) will help you get fitter. Remember training does he damage, recovery and resting is when your body repairs and actually gets fitter.0
