I had a multi tool with a chain breaker arrive today so thought i would get some practise in with it. After attempting to break a spare chain I have i cannot seem to get the pin to shift no matter how much pressure I seem to put on. The chain is an old campag veloce chain, so I wondered how much pressure is required to actually brake a chain or should it be as smooth as the youtube videos I have seen.
Thanks,
Dave

it can take quite a bit of force, especially as multitool chaintools tend to have less leverage due to their size

make sure the pin is lined up correctly with the tool, then just give it some ooomph
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny
  • +1 I was surprised how much force it took the first time I did one - as said just make sure the pin on the break tool is lined up properly and the chain link is seated properly in the tool and go for it. The first few twist on the tool are pretty hard - it feel like the first few need some force but once the pin unseats its easier.

Be aware that the pins are not generally reuseable on today's modern narrow chains; you'll need a re-useable link or a new pin to re-join the chain.
